I am a drummer and percussionist and a rhythm theorist. I have studied rhythms from around the world and love to ask why a certain rhythm works better than another. The Primordial Patterns of Percussion is a system of developing coordination and learning rhythm at the same time. Using the simple combination thats missing from the standard rudiments to create rhythmic DNA, two sequences that uses 3 strokes to create a Yin Yang of sound. Moving these sequences around the bar creates the Primordial Patterns. There are four 2/4 patterns, six 6/8 patterns, eight 4/4 patterns, and the same system can be used to generate patterns in odd time signatures as well! I'm super happy with how this whole theory came together and really excited to release it to the public!

What Makes This System Different?
This is not a book filled with page after page of notated patterns, it does have notation, but it's mainly a single theory on how to conceptualize rhythm.
Using an important element that's missing from the traditional rudiments, we create the “DNA” of the primordial patterns, a rhythmic sequence, or Yin & Yang of rhythm . By moving this “DNA” sequence to different positions in the bar, we cover all the rhythmic possibilities of a particular time signature in a very musical way!
It starts by introducing a series of hand patterns. Each hand pattern has a “built in” kick drum part for the drum set, making these patterns a unique way to build 3 and 4 way coordination, while also gaining a greater understanding of rhythmic possibilities.
Even without knowledge of music notation anyone can learn the primordial patterns with the simple right and left hand patterns.

It’s a great rudiment, but something is missing. A crucial variable left out of all 40 standardized drum rudiments.
