The Stink of Propaganda
While examining the period from 963-976, one realises just how many contrary portraits the different sources make of the mina figures involved.
Empress Theophano is the doting wife of the one hand and the serial murderess on the other.
Emperor Nikephoros II is praised by some and a great conqueror and frequently coming to blows with the church and people during his reign.
John Tzmiskes is a hero against the Rus' and Arabs and yet, one of the ringleaders of Nikephoros' usurpation, the murderer of Nikephoros, his kinsman, and exiled the empress.
It tells us quite a few things. That this was a time of rapid reverses and instability in the ERE; that our sources had to try and accommodate these changes as they wrote their accounts and what that can leave as a legacy on our own understanding of the period.
