Providence is a confessional church, affirming the London Baptist Confession of 1689. We're a Reformed congregation that's big on expository preaching of Scripture, boldness in righteousness, family-integration, and growth together in Christ to make a difference for His kingdom.

Doctrine matters! We learn from Ephesians that theology is critical. Paul begins Ephesians by setting forth what God has done for us, and then he calls us to live in light of that glorious grace. Who God is and what God has done for us in Christ is what motivates what we do for Him. Our position motivates our practice.
The Bible is both doctrinal and practical; Ephesians illustrates that as well as any book in the Bible.

Regeneration precedes faith. If you can believe without being born again, then why would you need to be born again. It's not that if you believe in Jesus you will be born again. It's if you are born again then you will believe in Jesus. A person could never come to Christ unless he was first born from above.
"So regeneration must come at the very beginning because if it is
possible for me to do something which will eventually lead to my
regeneration, I do not need regeneration."

An excerpt from tomorrow's sermon on Romans 6:1-4:
"And so at the end of verse 2 he adds, 'How shall we who died to sin still live in it'. That is a rhetorical question with an obvious answer. What’s the answer? We can’t. So there is the implied assertion. His implicit assertion is that if you are a Christian, if you are justified by faith, if you are saved by grace, you are dead to sin and can therefore no longer live in sin. Because the gospel frees us not only from sin’s penalty but also from sin’s power."

An excerpt from the Good Friday sermon for this evening:
"The word here indicates that Jesus paid the ransom. He paid the penalty for our sin. He took the punishment we deserve upon Himself. He drank the cup of God’s wrath. He drank our hell. He bore the curse for us at the cross. As Isaiah 53:10 says, it pleased the Lord to crush Him. God crushed Him so He wouldn’t have to crush you. Jesus paid the price in full."

"For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Rom. 6:23).
"This verse describes two inexorable absolutes: (1) spiritual death is the paycheck for every person's slavery to sin; and (2) eternal life is a free gift God gives underserving sinners who believe in His Son (cf. Eph. 2:8-9)".

"... faith is not a meritorious work. It is never the ground of justification-it is simply the channel through which it is received and it, too, is a gift (Eph. 2:8)."

Faith is not a work that makes us righteous. Rather, faith is a means by which we lay hold of God's righteousness. "Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believe" (Rom. 10:4). He fulfilled all righteousness in His sinless life and substitutionary death (Mt. 3:15). And that righteousness is accredited to our account through faith (Gen. 15:6; Rom. 3:21-31; Php. 3:9). We are justified by grace, through faith, in Christ alone.
