I've spent the better part of two decades getting rather too excited about things most people walk straight past — a carved doorway, a faded coat of arms, a portrait that's secretly a piece of political theatre. I'm Dr Allan Barton, and this channel is me sharing that excitement properly: deep dives into churches, royal history, lost art, and the odd genuinely macabre tale, researched seriously but never delivered as a lecture. Lovely to see this photo today of the King at the Castle of Mey. He was planting a rose called in the King's Rose in the garden created by his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, who adored roses. He is stood in front of the Queen Mother's favourite seat in the garden - the one featured in my latest video where she is shown with her corgis.

A Happy New Year to you all. My apologies for the slowness of content since Christmas, I have been having a bit of an extended break with a time to catch up on reading. I feel much refreshed for it and raring to go and I am back tomorrow with a new video. It is four years since I started the channel this month, and for the first video of the year I am going back to where I began. I will finally give you the promised sequel to my first video on St Cuthbert's relics, by looking at the treasures found in the coffin of St Cuthbert. That is going to be followed quickly on its heels by a continuation of my series on lost Tudor royal palaces, and I'll begin by looking at Margaret Beaufort's London residence, Cold Harbour - one that is very little known! So there is lots of interesting videos coming along, and be assured I am not resting on my laurels in 2026! Thanks for watching.

This is a fundraiser for St Mary's church in Broughton, and all are most welcome to attend and I'd love to see you there. The first orders will be sent out in the middle of October. This year the calendar features images from ‘Spinola’ Book of Hours in the Getty collection, showing the Medieval Year, depicted through the popular theme of the 'labours of the months'. Printed in A4 format on 170gsm silk paper and spiral bound, it comes in a white card envelope with a historical note on the history and significance of this extraordinary Book of Hours. I am only offering a very limited print run, and last year they disappeared very quickly!

USA TARIFFS. Just a quick update for USA magazine subscribers and purchasers. We can confirm that we are still able to post to the USA in light of the new tariffs. It took Royal Mail a few weeks to sort out a system that works, but it is now up and running. Royal Mail are now charging a handling fee before we send items out, and we are currently absorbing the cost of this. As we have had to wait for Royal Mail to sort this out, posting this month's issue of the magazine has been delayed by a week. However, September's issue has now been sent out to all subscribers. From next month, normal service will resume!
