Are Percussion Massage Guns a Waste of Money or the Next Best Thing?
Percussion devices are known to have several different names. You may have heard them called percussion massagers, massage guns, or even Hypervolt or TheraGun, which are technically brands but are now being used synonymously as a category similar to when people say Kleenex.
While massage guns have recently caught 🔥 with athletes around the world, do they truly work and can they be beneficial to you?
In short, massage guns are electronic massage devices that produce high-frequency vibrations through an attachment end-piece.
The brands that sell the devices claim that massage guns can improve muscle recovery, performance, sleep, mobility and reduce stress.
The devices are marketed to both athletes and non-athletes alike and can cost anywhere from $20-$500 USD!!
But do they really work...
While there is currently limited published research, current findings have shown that massage guns DO WORK as they can help improve reduce muscle tightness and improve joint range of motion.
As a physical therapist and massage gun owner myself, I can also tell you that massage guns do work.
Massage guns provide many recovery and injury prevention benefits by warming up the target muscle and increasing blood flow to the area. You simply use the massage gun to target sore, tight muscular areas for 5-10 minutes to allow for the pain relief actions to take effect.
Massage Gun Benefits:
- Muscle pain relief
- Decrease muscle tension
- Increase range of motion
- Improve blood circulation
- Decrease muscle soreness after workouts (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness)
- Injury prevention
- Provide relaxation and stress relief
