The V1 flying bomb was one of the first cruise missiles, developed by Nazi Germany during World War II. It was an unmanned weapon that terrorized England, causing widespread destruction and fear.

Powered by a pulsejet engine, the V1 operated by rapidly igniting fuel in bursts, creating a loud, repetitive buzzing sound. Hence the nickname "Buzz Bomb" or "Doodlebug." It had a simple but effective guidance system, using gyroscopes to control its speed, direction, and altitude. Once launched, it flew toward its target, and when it ran out of fuel, it would dive straight down, unleashing a devastating explosion.

The original V1 had a range of 150 miles, later extended to 250 miles, allowing it to strike deeper into England. Despite its destructive power, the British developed countermeasures, including fighter interceptions, anti-aircraft defenses, and even tipping the bomb mid-air to throw it off course.

I was really impressed by how the Nazis developed such an innovative and efficient weapon for its time. The V1 was cheap to produce, easy to launch, and a step toward modern cruise missiles. However, it was ultimately defeated by British defenses and advancing military tactics.
