953 windows.The Hawa Mahal in Jaipur is almost entirely façade - a five-storey screen of 953 hand-carved jharokhas, built in 1799 so the royal women in purdah could watch the street festivals below without ever being seen. Every window doubles as a vent, funnelling the desert breeze through the lattice to cool the palace - which is exactly how the "Palace of the Winds" earned its name.

Chand Baori in Abhaneri, Rajasthan is one of India's oldest and deepest stepwells: 13 storeys carved into the earth in a perfect diamond lattice, built around the 8th–9th century by Raja Chanda. At the bottom, the air stays 5–6°C cooler than the surface -the village's water source and its refuge from the desert heat, all in one.
You may even recognise it - its hypnotic geometry has appeared in films from Paheli to The Fall, and inspired a certain Batman prison.
