Hello and Welcome to Growing The Home Garden. Way back in 2007 our family bought our first home and began the process of transforming a barren landscape into our home garden. I started off by detailing my experiences on my blog which you can find at GrowingTheHomeGarden.com. This YouTube channel is a continuation of that process, what I've learned to do since being here, and sharing that process over the years. The videos are about plant propagation, vegetable gardening, plants, and garden projects. Growing The Home Garden is located in the Middle Tennessee area south of Nashville in zone 7 (Specifically between Spring Hill and Columbia, Tennessee). So if you have an interest in gardening and learning how to propagate plants please consider subscribing to the channel. Thanks for watching!

I've been busy lately but haven't been able to put the video together yet. Hopefully today I'll finish up with the beginning of my vegetable garden fence project. The first part is building an arbor as an entry gate for the garden. Back in 2009 I built an arbor I was really proud of. It was a part of a competitiion against other bloggers with Better Homes & Gardens/ Home Depot. I did a few unusual things to it that made it unique and it turned out great. Since we moved to a new home I wanted to replicate that arbor as much as possible. The dimensions are a little different and I've tried some other things with this one which you'll be able to see once I put the video together. I'm planning to finish the structure of the arbor today. Staining it will have to wait until the wood dries out more. Here is a look at the arbor I built in 2009 which was still standing in 2024 when we sold the old home!
I did a "how to build" this arbor articles on my website which you can find here if you are curious! growingthehomegarden.com/how-to-build-arbor-part-1…

I just put together a list of plants you can propagate in July! 18 different plants: which are just a small amount of many many options! I included links to posts about propagating these plants in the past. It's all available for free on my website here: growingthehomegarden.com/18-plants-to-propagate-in…
So if you're looking for ideas of something to propagate this month this may help!

Happy Father's Day to all the other dads out there! I spent some time in the garden (big surprise there!) Planted an Arrowood viburnum, 'Little Gem' magnolia, and a rhododendron. This photo is from the front garden. I was checking what I thought was a dead crape myrtle but it actually began putting out a new branch. It was half of a potted crape myrtle I bought in the fall and divided. The other half is doing very good. I turned around and saw the 'Cheyenne Spirit' echinacea and 'Primal Scream' daylily and thought I would take a picture.
Hope you've had a good day in the garden! If so what did you get done today?

Growing The Home Garden
This weekend our zero turn mower just suddenly stopped running. My son was mowing the grass and it completely quit while he was driving along. It wouldn't start up again. The motor just kept spinning like it was trying to start but just couldn't. Seeing as how it's 12 years old and our property has around 4 acres of open space instead of the 1.3 acres we used to have it may be time for a new mower. It was a 46" deck and a larger deck size might be very beneficial. The old Troy-Bilt mower kind of limped along the last couple years with air leaking from tires. I had it in the shop twice over its lifespan, once for bent rods. That happened while mowing our property several years before we built our house.
If you have a larger property with about 3-4 acres of open space what kind of mower do you use? Do you like it or do you wish you had gotten a different one? I would really love to hear some input as most of the reviews I see online seem about the same. I don't want to spend a fortune either as I would rather save the money for more plants, greenhouse, shed and other gardening stuff!
Thanks for your help!
Dave

Here's an update on several plants I've been rooting this winter. Including plants like Rosemary that I took cuttings of in the fall to overwinter indoors, coleus that I'm prepping for putting outdoors this spring, artemisia 'Powis Castle', snake plant, and some seed starting updates.

7 days ago I posted a video on how to grow coneflower from seed. Today I have little sprouts pushing up with their first leaves (cotyledons). Cold dry stratification works well to help echinacea to germinate. Check out the video here: https://youtu.be/RwNwBEU3ILA

Frost is incoming! We collected the last of the tomatoes. I think we'll be making some fried green tomatoes and green tomato salsa soon. Do you have a favorite thing to do with green tomatoes?
