Voice of the Martyrs USA

In January 1956, missionaries Jim Elliot, Pete Fleming, Ed McCully, Nate Saint and Roger Youderian were violently killed by the Waodani tribe in Ecuador. The five had spent months contacting the Waodanis through over-flights and gift exchanges via an ingenious bucket drop. Though the tribe had a history of violent encounters with outsiders, the men had decided they'd established a degree of mutual trust that would support direct contact.

Within two years of their deaths, Elisabeth Elliot and Nate Saint’s sister made a friendly and lasting contact with the Waodanis, and translation of the Bible into the Waodani language began. One by one, the men who murdered the missionaries became believers in the One who sent the five to reach them.

“Please pray for persecuted Christians right now by yourself and then later with others among your friends, family and church. As you do, be careful not to think of them as a problem to solve or a need to meet, but as precious family members. Do not pray for them as nations, people groups or statistics, but rather focus on every precious face. As you pray for them, you are praying with them because we are united in the same body and by the same Spirit. And as we pray together, we are all formed into the image of Christ our Lord, to the glory of Almighty God our Father.”

VOM President Cole Richards writes, “Prayer is cooperation with the Holy Spirit, who by God’s grace dwells in the heart of everyone who is truly in Christ Jesus our Lord. Because each of us is indwelt by the Holy Spirit, we are in union with both Christ and the other members of his body. We are presently united with our persecuted Christian family members around the world because we have in common with them the one Father of heaven’s eternal family; the one head of the body, Jesus Christ; and the one Spirit who dwells within us.”

Richard Wurmbrand, who was imprisoned in Communist Romania for 14 years, writes: “The Orthodox underground church in the Soviet Union had many [bold believers who suffered for their faith] who acted rightly for good aims. You can strengthen your own faith by becoming one in heart and soul with such men and women.”

VOM founder Richard Wurmbrand writes: “This is one of the great things Christ’s church has to offer! God has a church, a fellowship of lasting friendship. In it, every friendship is for eternity. It endures even when the friend sins against you. Here, you become the friend of Jesus himself. You can help martyrs with a piece of bread, but they can help you by sharing their joy, their commitment to the truth, Christ the Lord.”

A prayer inspired by persecuted Christians: We thank you, Lord, that you are our perfect Father. Our earthly fathers may fail us, but you never will! We pray that countless others will come to know your perfect love through your children. May we obediently and graciously reach out to the lost around us, letting our light and good deeds shine in such a way that they glorify you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Although they were Muslim, Zaynab and her husband fled Iraq with their children after members of ISIS murdered her father-in-law. A few Christians lived in Zaynab’s new neighborhood, and she soon became friends with one who invited her to church. At the church, Zaynab tearfully told members about her struggles and needs. She soon began visiting the church regularly to receive food parcels, and she was surprised by the Christians’ ongoing kindness. When her father passed away, Zaynab was incapacitated by her grief. Several Christians prayed for her and cared for her, encouraging her to seek Jesus. Zaynab cried out to God for hours. After falling asleep, she had a dream where she finally felt peace and woke up feeling renewed. Fully understanding that Christ is Lord, she placed her faith in him.

Join us in praying for Jeevan and Gamya, who face opposition from Hindu extremists for sharing the gospel in Nepal: Dear heavenly Father, thank you for our brother and sister Jeevan and Gamya, who are faithfully serving you. We pray that you will fill their hearts and minds with your strength and peace so they may know clearly how you are directing them to care for each other and for your church. And may we be faithful to bear their burden with them in prayer. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Ministry work in Nepal had taken a toll on Jeevan and Gamya when they met with VOM workers to share their story. Hindu extremists had persuaded others to oppose Jeevan and his fellow Christians. In time, they bombed two churches (not Jeevan’s), killing one person and injuring another. Jeevan felt torn between caring for his wife and continuing in ministry. A VOM worker told him earnestly, “I want you to know deep in your heart what I am about to say. If you [decide to] go forward faithfully … and something happens to you, the family of God will help take care of your wife and family.” Knowing that the global body of Christ will care for and pray for them and their family gave Jeevan and Gamya immediate peace. The turmoil evident on their faces at the beginning of the interview had been replaced with joy. Pray for Jeevan, Gamya and their ministry today.
