Asherah's Orchard

Asherah's Orchard

Hey everyone, it’s been a while. Sorry for my absence, I’ve been taking some time away because this semester has been incredibly full. Between attending amazing events at my university, connecting with inspiring people, and getting involved in new projects, life has been moving fast. I plan to return to making content soon and will likely do a livestream to share everything that’s been happening and what’s coming next. I really miss you all and can’t wait to catch up and reconnect.
Sincerely,
Ariel

Asherah's Orchard

I’m considering making a series of videos about Canaanite deity names, and their linguistic legacy present in Judaism today. I will likely start with El and Asherah and work my way to the more obscure and less well known figures whose nominal roots are incredibly significant in not just Judaism but all Abrahamic traditions.

Asherah's Orchard

Happy first day Of Hanukkah/חנוכה/𐤇𐤍𐤅𐤊𐤄! As the days are at their shortest and darkness increases it’s easy to take comfort in well-lit and nicely heated homes, delicious holiday foods, and a myriad of gifts. As we celebrate in safety and comfort it’s crucial to remember that right now there is war raging still in Ukraine and Gaza, countless families are cold, hungry, and desperate for the darkness they are facing to recede.

Regardless of why great violence and evil occurs, the solution is never to respond to darkness with darkness, as all that does in plunge the world into twilight, all it takes is one light and the darkness cannot abide there.

“...because one small light can push away a whole lot of darkness.”
-Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, Tanya, chapter 12.

In a twist of fate, just as the Seleucid (Syrian) Greeks were the antagonists of the Hanukkah story, we can derive lots of inspiration and wisdom from the Free Syrian People who have thrown off their own modern day Antiochus Epiphanes, a mere man who styled himself as a god, forcing his subjects to worship him at pain of death. This modern Syrian Antiochus, forcibly involved huge swathes of the population in his regime of terror, so much so that prosecuting and punishing all those responsible would be practically impossible, and only tear what remains of Syria further apart. Despite the reservations and fears of many, this new and Free Syria poses a shining beacon of hope and light to those who fear there is not a better path.

After 50 years of brutal repression and ethnic conflict in Syria, former enemies are embracing, people can speak their true feelings without the same fear of reprisal they once did. If Syrians who once viewed themselves at war with other Syrians are now rejoicing in the streets together, it shows that Russians and Ukrainians, Israelis and Palestinians, despite all the complicated history and nationalistic fervor, share more in common than they differ, not only as humans but as peoples who share common cultural and religious origins.

This is all too say, there is always hope, and no matter how dark the night is, no matter how difficult it is to see right from wrong, more darkness is never the answer, but a single light can reveal that which years of darkness has concealed.

“Even in the darkest place, the light of a single candle can be seen far and wide.”
— Lubavitcher Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson

This first night and day is associated with Malchut the emanation of Kingship/Kingdom/Reign/Rule which is the lowest Sephirah but also once of the most important. It’s associated with the physical world and each day we add a light we also move up on the tree of life, till we ascend to the Understanding of Binah. I hope to do a Hannukah livestream at some point to touch on more of these ideas but I wanted to push out this post before it’s time to light the second night’s candles where I’m at.

Wishing everyone a happy, healthy, and peaceful holiday season, and may we merit to see peace on Earth in our lifetime, and reconciliation between those in conflict. Similarly may we merit the coming of Moshiach speedily and within our days!

במהרה בימינו/𐤁𐤌𐤄𐤓𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤍𐤅/
