How AI Hiring Tools Discriminate Against Newcomers in Canada | My Interview with Canadian Immigrant Magazine
Did you know that many AI-driven hiring tools used in Canada might be silently screening out qualified immigrants?
In my recent interview with Canadian Immigrant magazine, I spoke about how artificial intelligence in recruitment is creating new barriers for newcomers — especially those with accents, non-Western names, and international experience.
Here’s what you need to know:
• Some companies use AI to scan your resume, LinkedIn profile, and even one-way video interviews — often without telling you.
• ESL speakers and immigrants are disproportionately affected. One client of mine, fluent in three languages, was consistently rejected until we changed a single line on their resume .
• Voice analysis tools can penalize candidates with non-native accents. I shared how tools like these fail to understand diverse speech patterns — even Siri and Google get it wrong sometimes.
If you’ve ever felt invisible after applying for dozens of jobs in Canada, you are not imagining it.
This blog breaks down the issue, offers strategies to beat AI filters, and pushes for fairer, more transparent hiring.
Read and share if you believe talent shouldn’t be filtered by bias.

From Two Suitcases to Top 25: Why I’m Asking for Your Vote
I arrived in Canada with just two suitcases, a heart full of hope, and no idea what the future would hold.
Fresh after an arranged marriage, I left behind everything familiar—my family, my friends, my entire life—to start over in a new country. Like so many immigrants, I did what I had to do. I took on survival jobs, worked long hours, and kept learning. I upgraded my education and eventually built a career in a financial institution, rising to lead a team.
But the story didn’t end there.
After years of climbing the corporate ladder, I made the bold decision to pivot to consulting—not because it was easy, but because I felt called to do more. I wanted to share my lived experience, to help other immigrants break through barriers, be seen, and thrive. My story became my strategy, and I made it my mission to help others rewrite theirs.
That’s why I’m incredibly humbled to share that I’ve been shortlisted for the 15th annual Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Awards 2025, presented by Western Union and COSTI.
It’s an honour I never expected—but it’s not just about me.
This award is a celebration of all of us who came with dreams packed tightly between clothes and memories. It’s about proving that we belong here—not just to survive, but to thrive.
This is a People’s Choice Award, and I need your vote to make it into the final Top 25.
If my story has ever inspired you—or reminded you of your own journey—I’d be honoured if you could take a few seconds to vote for me.
🗳️ How to Vote (takes less than 10 seconds):
1. Visit the official voting page (link and QR code in the flyer).
2. Search for my name: Sweta Regmi
3. Click Vote, enter your email address—and you’re done!
Voting is open until June 5, 2025, and limited to one vote per device due to cookie tracking.
And here’s a little mystery…
I honestly have no idea who nominated me! If it was you—please DM me. I’d love to thank you personally.
I’d be truly grateful if you could also share this with your community across Canada. Your support isn’t just about helping me win—it’s about showing the world what immigrants are capable of.
“We may have left our countries behind—but we didn’t leave our brains, our skills, or our ambition.”
— Sweta Regmi
Thank you for being a part of this journey.
Let’s show the world what immigrants are made of. 💪

How the English Language Shapes Our Brain with Biases
Language as a Tool for Exclusion
We’ve heard of racial profiling, but what about accent profiling? It’s real. Need proof? When Trump visited India, a journalist openly said, "I can’t understand a word he said"—about an Indian official speaking English. Meanwhile, when the French president or Ukraine’s Zelensky speaks in broken English, we all just nod along like it’s poetry. But when Modi spoke, they brought in an English-to-English translator—for Trump. Apparently, English doesn’t sound right unless spoken in a certain way.
