The "Save the Blue Heart of Europe" campaign aims to protect rivers of high natural value in the Balkans, which are threatened by over 3,400 hydropower projects. The campaign is coordinated by the international NGOs Riverwatch and EuroNatur and is implemented jointly with partner organisations in the Balkan countries. For more information balkanrivers.net/
Save the Blue Heart of Europe
By now, it is no secret that the Balkans are home to some of the wildest rivers in Europe. But do we know how many are left?
We’ve spent 13 years tracking the pulse of this “Blue Heart,” mapping nearly 84,000km of rivers.
The data is in. Stay tuned this Wednesday.

Save the Blue Heart of Europe
IT’S ECOCIDE! 🚨
Below the newly built Ulog Dam on the upper Neretva (BiH), tragedy struck: a mass die-off of fish and other river species along 7 km of river.
The cause? A release of oxygen-starved deep water from the dam reservoir, suffocating all life in the river downstream
👉 Will the hydropower operators be held accountable for this environmental crime?
👉 Or will ecocide go unpunished once again?

OVO JE EKOCID! 🚨
Ispod novoizgrađene brane Ulog na gornjoj Neretvi (BiH) dogodio se užas: masovni pomor ribe i drugih riječnih vrsta duž 7 km toka rijeke.
Uzrok?
#StopEkocid #SaveTheBlueHeart #Neretva #StopBranama

Save the Blue Heart of Europe
In Herzegovina, rivers don’t always flow where you can see them.
Here, in one of the world’s great karst landscapes, rivers slip underground, travel through vast cave systems, and return to the surface as powerful springs.
These hidden rivers shape breathtaking scenery—emerald pools, cascading waterfalls, and limestone terraces—and they sustain both people and unique ecosystems found nowhere else.
But they are also fragile. Nearby threats from hydropower, mining and pollution risk damaging rivers like the Zalomka, Buna, Bregava and Neretva. Protecting these rivers means protecting Herzegovina’s lifeblood.
On World Rivers Day, we celebrate the beauty, mystery, and importance of rivers—above ground and below.
