Pluto was classified as a planet when it was discovered in 1930, but in 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) redefined what constitutes a planet. According to the new criteria, a celestial body must meet three conditions to be considered a planet:

1) Orbit the Sun
2) Have sufficient mass to be spherical
3) Clear its orbit of other debris

Pluto meets the first two criteria but fails the third because it shares its orbit with other objects in the Kuiper Belt, a region of icy bodies beyond Neptune. Therefore, it was reclassified as a "dwarf planet."

While it's no longer officially a planet, Pluto remains a fascinating celestial body and an important part of our solar system's story!
