On this day in 1991, Freddie Mercury of Queen died of AIDS-related bronchial pneumonia in Kensington, London, England, at age 45.

Freddie Mercury, born Farrokh Bulsara on September 5, 1946, in Zanzibar, is celebrated as one of the greatest rock icons of all time. Known for his extraordinary vocal range, electrifying stage presence, and artistic genius, he was the frontman of the legendary band Queen. Mercury was a prolific songwriter, penning timeless classics like Bohemian Rhapsody, Somebody to Love, We Are the Champions, and Don't Stop Me Now.

A versatile performer, Mercury was not only known for his flamboyant persona but also for his dedication to pushing musical boundaries. His ability to blend rock, opera, and pop created a unique sound that continues to inspire musicians worldwide.
