NRM Party Faces Deepening Rift Between Kadaga and Among

The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) is once again in the spotlight as tensions between Right Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, the former Speaker of Parliament, and Right Hon. Anita Annet Among, the current Speaker, continue to dominate political discussions across Uganda.

At the heart of the controversy is a power struggle within the party’s leadership structures, with sharp divisions emerging between the two camps. Sources close to the NRM Secretariat reveal that some members have openly taken sides, raising fears of a deeper rift that could weaken internal cohesion ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Rebecca Kadaga served as Speaker of Parliament for a decade (2011–2021), becoming the first woman to hold that prestigious office. However, her tenure ended in 2021 after she lost the party’s endorsement to Anita Among, who rose rapidly through the political ranks with strong backing from the NRM Central Executive Committee.

Kadaga’s supporters argue that she was unfairly sidelined, while Among’s camp insists the transition reflected the party’s democratic choice and the need for fresh leadership.
