I had the pleasure of hearing Debbie Millman speak at ODU recently, and I have not stopped thinking about it.

I knew Debbie as a design icon. The reputation. The body of work. The legend.

What I did not expect was how vulnerable and real her talk would be. She walked us through rejection after rejection. Obstacles. Doubt. The long, unglamorous middle. And the throughline was not talent. It was resilience. She kept rebuilding herself. Over and over.

Later, we had dinner with her, and that is when it really clicked. She is not just accomplished. She is humble. Generous. Present. Genuinely cool.If more leaders in the design community carried themselves the way Debbie does, we would all be better for it.

Grateful for the inspiration. Even more grateful for the reminder that success and humanity can coexist.
