Plate Dance Movement
Plate dance is also called a group dance which is performed by more than two dancers. The characteristic of the plate dance is that the dancers carry plates in both hands, with the surface of the plate facing outwards.
The plate dance is danced with dynamic, agile, energetic movements and even seems acrobatic because it often displays difficult movements.
Quoting from the book 'Art and Culture' by Harry Sulastianto, et al, the movements contained in the Plate Dance include the batanam (planting) movement, the manyabik (sickle) movement, the threshing (rice threshing) movement, and the baguliang (rolling) movement.
These movements are a depiction of community activities at work. The plate dance is accompanied by traditional music called talempong. Talempong music consists of six talempongs, a small gong, a tambua, a bottle and a type of rattle.
These instruments are sounded by hitting them with a bat called a panokok, except for the tambua which is hit with the hand and the rattle which is hit with the hand.
