In the vessel, a substance is heated in open fire until it is reduced to a dry, white ash. Water and everything volatile are driven away. What remains is stripped of its former shape.
Calcinatio is not destruction for its own sake. It is the burning away of what can no longer serve the Work — the first purification of matter, and of the self.

The first operation, and where the Work always begins again.
In the vessel: a substance is heated in open fire until it is reduced to a dry, white ash. Water and everything volatile is driven off.
In a life: the burning of the self-image’s pretensions. It is usually lived as humiliation, the forced recognition that the picture of yourself was a construction. The fire does not ask permission, and what burns was never solid.

The wind carried it in its belly.
The cycle of Maier’s emblems begins again, and it begins here: with a giant figure of the wind, swollen with something not yet born.
The motto is a line of the Emerald Tablet, the oldest and shortest text of the Hermetic tradition. The child of the Work is carried before it is born, by something as invisible as wind. Nothing visible has happened yet, and something is already on its way.

In the vessel: the matter thickens and sets into a solid body that holds its form. Older texts also call it congelation.
In a life: spirit and body setting into a durable self. It feels like arriving at a version of yourself that no longer shifts with every outside pressure. The stone holds.
It is the second word of the oldest formula in alchemy, solve et coagula. Dissolving was never the goal. It was what made a better coagulation possible.

Rex ab aquis potatis morbum, a medicis curatus sanitatem obtinet.
The king, made ill by the waters he drank, is cured by the physicians and regains his health.
In Maier's engraving the king has drunk too much of the waters and lies sick in bed. The physicians come, and he recovers.
The detail worth keeping is the second half of the motto. The king does not heal himself. Throughout this tradition the king is the ruling principle, the part of us that is used to being in charge, and here even he needs help from outside.
Not everything is cured alone, and asking for help is not the failure of the Work. Sometimes it is the next operation.

Lupus ab Oriente et Canis ab Occidente venientes se invicem momorderunt.
A wolf from the east and a dog from the west have bitten each other.
The wolf and the dog are the same animal in two conditions: one wild, one tame. In Maier's engraving they meet from opposite directions and go for each other's throats.
The alchemists did not treat this fight as a problem to be stopped. The wild and the tame meet, and they fight, and the conflict is part of the joining. Nothing unites without first finding out where it disagrees.

In the vessel: the liquid is heated until it rises as vapour, condenses and is collected. Then the process is repeated, and each pass comes out purer than the last.
In a life: purification by repetition. It rarely feels like progress. It feels like going through the same thing again: the same conversation, the same pattern, the same lesson you thought you had already learned. The difference is that this time you go through it more carefully, and you remove what the first pass missed.
