After years spent in corporate jobs, we finally decided to begin investing in ourselves and make steady moves towards our dream of homesteading. We used the inspiration of others who have come before us like Joel Salatin to "start where you are" and homestead on our small semi-suburban property. We are a couple who seek to return to the legacy homesteading traditions that made this country great.
Our long-term goal is to transition from corporate jobs into a small business providing wholesome food choices to our communities and to teach our children entrepreneurial skills that will prepare them for the future. As we move in that direction, we'd love to bring you along on our journey!
Purpose Driven Homestead
It's been a little while since we posted a video, but there's a new one dropping tomorrow about fall pasture seeding. It's WAY overdue! We've had SUCH a dry summer and fall that there's a hay shortage, so I've been spending a lot of time hauling hay onto the farm to cover our animals for the winter. Hoping to get back in the swing of things soon. Thanks for the patience!

We had a new arrival on the farm! We went and picked up a new Jersey calf a couple of days ago. We named her Magnolia but we call her Maggie for short. One of our Jerseys isn't getting around as well as she once did and we're trying to expand our herd a little now and plan for the future. Its going to take a year or so for Maggie to get to maturity but she's super sweet and the kids LOVE her. We're working on halter training and just getting her used to everyone right now.

We have been so busy building our homestead that we haven't dropped a full length video in quite some time. So sorry about that! So we wanted to let all of you know that you can see our new video that we just finished on Banding Bulls. Just like Jurassic Park, we can't have any "unauthorized breeding" on the homestead. LOL. It was a super hot day and what a challenge!

We have been on the search for the right Livestock Guardian Dogs for our family and little homestead. There are so many great breeds, but we eventually settled on a fairly unknown breed called Turkish Boz Shepherds or "Boz" for short. They look a little like Anatolians but are considerably bigger. I won't go into all the details here, but they are an ancient breed weighing in at 150-200lbs that are laid back with people but formidable with predators. If all goes according to plans, these two "little" girls will be joining our homestead family tomorrow. We're so excited!

We are putting the sides and roof on our mobile hen tractor. We're going to do a few videos on that soon, but wanted to ask opinions below. 👇
We used some old metal roofing that we just removed from a tobacco barn and are trying to decide... should we paint the outside white or leave it the rusty color that it naturally was?
We think it looks kind of cool as is, but also thought thinking the chickens and ducks would be cooler if we painted the outside white. We won't be painting the interior at all because we wouldn't want them to eat any paint. That would be bad for the bird and for us.
What do you guys think? Drop us a comment and let us know your opinion!
Either way... we're repainting that yellow the trailer was painted...lol.

We recently shared that we were moving from the Midwest to the Southeast. If you missed the video, check it out here -- https://youtu.be/QsHDX2eCB8I
We're busy building chicken tractors and other things right now that we'll share with you all soon. In the meantime, I thought I'd share yesterday's temps for our outside work. Quite an adjustment for us coming from the cool Midwest, but we're enjoying the work to get our little homestead up and running!

Hey Backyard Homesteaders! We plan on dropping a new video on Sunday but we've had a few people ask us about doing a LIVE session periodically to answer questions and interact with everyone in real-time.
So our question is... would you be interested if we did a LIVE session in the near future or would you prefer to keep watching our videos on demand on your own timeline? If we get enough interest... we'll try to set something up and probably ask for feedback on topics as we get closer. Thanks in advance and much LOVE - Patrick and Amanda
