In the regions of Afghanistan where strong and fast-flowing rivers run through the valleys, local people developed a unique and traditional way to cross the water.
They used the skin of a calf (locally prepared and dried), which they would inflate with air until it became like a floating bag. This inflated skin worked as a natural life-support device.
People would tie the air-filled skin close to their stomach or chest and use it to float across the river. With the help of this simple but clever technique, they were able to cross powerful rivers, go fishing, or even swim safely.
This traditional method shows the intelligence, creativity, and survival skills of local communities who lived in mountainous and river-rich areas without modern equipment.
