Question words

Question words, often called wh- words, are function words that can be used to ask open questions.

Some words, such as who, which or where, can also be used to introduce relative clauses.

We use the question words who (for people), what/which (for things), when (for time), where (for places), why (for reasons) and how (for more details).

What are you doing at the weekend?
Where is the post office?
How much does it cost?

Where did you go swimming? > In the swimming pool in town.

Why did you go there? > Because it’s a nice, big pool.

Who did you go swimming with? > With Amy.

What time did you meet Amy? > At 10 o’clock.

How did you get there? > On the bus.

The Simple Present Of The Verb To Be

To be is a copula, a word used to link the subject of a sentence with a predicate (a subject complement).

Remember:
I, you, he, she, it, you, they are "subject pronouns" (also called personal pronouns, a term used to include both subject and object pronouns.)
We use he for a man, she for a woman, and it for a thing.
Am, are, is are forms of the verb to be in the simple present.
'm, 're, 's are short (contracted) forms of  am, are, is
'm not, aren't, isn't are short (contracted forms) of am not, are not, is not.

We use the verb be to talk about:

Who we are: I‘m Steven, and this is Isabella. And this is my daughter, Alicia.
Age: I‘m 24 years old, and my father is 50.
Job: I‘m a teacher, and my wife is a doctor.
Nationality: Alex is from Ireland, and Sonia is from Spain.
Feelings: I'm scared
Colour: Our dog is black.
Prices: It's seven pounds.
The weather: It's sunny today.
The time: What time is it? It's ten past four.
Descriptions in general: He is very short and thin.

VERB TO BE (am, is, are)

İngilizcede “To Be” kalıbı “Am Is Are” yardımcı fiillerini ifade eder.

Bu yardımcı fiiller özneye göre değişir.

To be fiili bir kopuladır, bir cümlenin öznesini bir yüklem ile ilişkilendirmek için kullanılan bir kelimedir. (tamamlayıcı)

To be; İngilizce'de "olmak", "bulunmak" manalarına gelir.
Yardımcı fiil olarak kullanıldığında zamana göre değişebilen bir yapıya sahiptir.
Verb to be cümle içinde eylem olmadığı zaman kullanılır. Bu durumun bazı istisnaları da vardır.

Başlıkta verdiğimiz "am, is ve are" yardımcı fiilleri, "to be" fiilinin "present tense" yani "geniş zaman" da aldığı yapıdır. Bu yardımcı fiillerin kullanımı özneye göre değişmektedir.

Biz kimiz, yaş, meslek, uyruk, duygu, renk, fiyat, hava, saat...

To be fiili ile olumlu cümle kurmak için "am", "is", "are" yapılarını öznenin hemen sonrasında bir isim, sıfat, edat öbeği ile kullanırız.
