A quick but powerful video by a friend of mine.

Assembled the darted pockets for my run of messenger bags. I really like the shape of these pockets because they add just enough storage space without making the bag bulky.

Did a little cleanup and blackening on my knife. Adding some gun blue over the rust blueing gives a beautiful deep black, followed up a thin wax polish to protect the steel and wood.

After lots of trial and error (and playing with hazardous chemicals), I've finally found a reliable way to blacken the zinc on my stained glass!
Using Birchwood Casey Gun Blue and some Black Stove Polish, the zinc takes on a beautiful black color. I still have to play with the solder and see if I can get it darker but even this gun metal color looks awesome!

I also figured out how to turn my cement black by getting a simple bag of charcoal that I'll be grinding down into pigments.

All this means that I'm finally getting back into doing some stained glass windows! I've already got one design ready, one design in mind and a cabinet idea that could use a window as well.

Got a new leather on the bench for this project. Like other hides I've worked with, this one has a pretty light colored core which means I have to dye all the exposed edges.

With a little bit of practice I was able to get a nice edge coating with some medium brown dye. I also dyed the flesh side of the straps for better continuity and contrast.

The all leather satchel is almost finished, just needs a shoulder strap!

As far as a simple design goes I do like this bag, the only part I'm not super happy with is the leather. This leather scratches really easily and the scratches turn a very light tan color, so they're kind of obvious. I think with some time and breaking in this bag could looked pretty good.

Starting the stitching on the bag by getting all the flat assemblies together and utilising some grimey brass/copper rivets to hold the buckles and rings in place.

Had the idea to blacken the back side of the straps so when they're folded over you get a nice finished surface rather than the rough out leather, also blends better than the rough leather.

An unexpected but amazing use for my veritas skewed block plane!
Since starting with leather work I've struggled to properly skive my edges, usually tearing up the leather as I go, but with a razor sharp edge on my block plane I can get a perfectly tapered skive that is mostly even. Still not quite as fast as a skiving machine but insanely faster than what I was doing before.

If you're a woodworker stepping into leatherwork, try out your block plane and you might be shocked by the results!

Ignore the rust too, it's been humid lately and paste wax just isn't cutting it anymore...

Starting a new *all leather* project and trying to use some of this SB foot harness leather that I kind of love and hate. It's a beautifully rich dark brown with some nice natural characteristics but the core of the leather is a very light tan color that clashes with any other material.
So with the pieces for this project I dyed all the edges black then finished them which turned out pretty well, giving the edges a burnt look that'll blend nicely.

Finished off a prototype bag this weekend that turned out significantly better than expected! A lot of planning went into the design, but I also missed important parts that took hands on experience to figure out. I honestly didn't think it would be successful so I didn't both turning the camera on...

I'm going to be taking this bag back and forth to work (minus the axes) for a few weeks to figure out what I like/dislike then I'll make a video about how it's made!
