Ok, let’s go Ford 406 for 406k subs! This engine was a 1962 Ford FE that launched the Total Performance era with a big cam, compression, and three deuces! The Thunderbird Super Performance tri-carb unit was advertised at 405 hp. This engine was quickly replaced by the 427…which is a story for another landmark.

And now an Oldsmobile 403 for 403k subs! The maligned 403 was a big-bore, short-stroke, weak-sauce, smog-era replacement for the 455. While they could be built for good street power, they have been bashed for weak main webs and siamesed cylinders. Worse, they were used in Buicks, Oldsmobiles, and Pontiacs from ‘77 to ‘79, becoming the “corporate” GM engine. We musclecar people know them mostly for their use in Trans Ams.

Whoa! I missed 401k subs in the middle of the night and then 402k this morning! Thank you! So here’s a 401 Buick nailhead, a 401 AMC, and a 402 Chevy. Of course the 402 was an extension of the ‘65-‘69 396, with the factory expanding the bore from 4.094 (weird) to 4.125. Even though the engine was 402 cubes, it was marketed as a 396 or a 400 on various models of cars and trucks.

A bunch of 400 engines for 400k subs! They only allow 5 pics but there are way more 400 engines Olds big-bore 400, Olds small-bore 400, Buick (and the 401 nailhead was advertised as a 400 at first), Pontiac, Mopar, Ford, and the AMC 401 that was sold as a 400 in IH trucks! Of course there’s the Chevy 400 small-block 400 and the big-block 402 that was sold as a 400 in some applications.

A Chevy 396 for 396k subs! The 396 was the first Mark IV big-block released by Chevrolet and GMC, replacing the W-motor 348 and 409. The 396 was introduced in 1965 by Chevy and 1968 by GMC. A number of different power options were available, and several of those remain common in NHRA Stock and Super Stock competition. The last year for the pure 396 was 1969. In 1970, the bore was increased from 4.094 to 4.125, upping the displacement to 402 despite some cars continuing to be marketed and badged as SS396. And the 402 is another story for a later day.

And Olds 394 for 394k subs! This is a ‘64 Starfire engine, same as the Jetstar, and was the end of production for the 394. It boasted 345 hp and 440 lb-ft. It was also the end of Olds V8s that had any trace of the original Rockets of 1949.
