I sold this RAG agent for $4,500.

Want to know how I built it?

A university client approached me with a challenge. They needed a RAG solution for their learning management system, but universities have strict rules about API keys and subscriptions. You know the drill - putting everything on your personal credit card then claiming it back later.

↳ They wanted a chatbot like NotebookLM where students could select specific documents and either chat with them or generate quizzes

↳ The big requirement was using offline models only - no cloud costs, no surprise bills

↳ This meant running local embedding models, chat models, and databases on their own GPU

Here's where it got interesting. I had to figure out if we could individually vectorize each document and make them selectable later, or if we were stuck with one massive database.

After some R&D, I discovered we could indeed vectorize each document separately. This meant students could pick exactly which sources they wanted to learn from.

The key was doing all the embedding upfront to avoid chat latency - nothing kills a learning experience like slow responses.

The solution was a containerized chatbot they could plug into their LMS, giving students NotebookLM-like features without the cloud dependency.
