Joe Angelini Sr. — A Life of Courage and Dedication.
With 40 years of service in the FDNY, Joe Angelini Sr. was the senior member of Rescue 1 and, at 63, the oldest firefighter in New York City who wasn’t a fire chief. He loved the job so deeply that he once told a fellow firefighter, “I’d like to do 50 years on the fire department.”
On September 11, 2001, even while on light duty due to an injury, Joe raced to the World Trade Center after the North Tower was hit. Rescue 1 was already ascending the stairs, so he stayed in the lobby, helping evacuate people. He survived the collapse of the South Tower and was last seen tending to victims in the street below when the North Tower fell. He was found a week later. His wife was given his helmet, and Rescue 1 told her not to clean it—“because Joe liked being dirty.”
Joe wasn’t just a hero because of 9/11. He was a hero every day he raised his right hand to protect the city. He was a loving husband, an amazing father, and one hell of a firefighter.
