India Became Independent on 15th August, 1947 — But They Still Didn’t Know Where the Border Was
What actually happened?
15 August 1947: India celebrated Independence. Pakistan had become independent on 14 August.
But there was a problem: the final boundary dividing India and Pakistan had not yet been publicly announced.
The man drawing the line was Cyril Radcliffe — a British lawyer who had never visited India before and was given only a few weeks to divide Punjab and Bengal.
The Radcliffe Award was finally announced on 17 August 1947 — two days after Indian Independence.
This meant that people in some border areas did not know whether their homes would fall in India or Pakistan even as Independence was being celebrated.
Lahore was one of the biggest uncertainties. It had a Muslim majority, but Hindus and Sikhs had a huge economic, commercial and cultural presence in the city.
The final decision placed Lahore in Pakistan.
And the consequences were enormous: millions were forced to leave their homes, while properties, businesses and entire neighbourhoods changed hands.
The border was decided on paper — but for millions, the consequences were lived on the ground.
