Growing up I was the quietest person in any room.

In my own head. Observing everything. Never quite feeling like I belonged.

I dealt with depression and did not understand it at the time. I just knew some days felt heavier than they should and I had no words for it.

What got me through was deciding that whatever I was carrying did not get to decide who I became.

I grew up without a father figure.

No man around to show me what showing up consistently looked like.

What I did have was a mum who did the job of two parents without ever complaining.

Many of you reading this know exactly what that takes because you’re doing it right now, or you grew up watching someone do it.

When I became a dad at 22, I made myself a promise.

My son would never have to question whether his father was proud of him, present for him, or there when he needed him most.

Ten years later, I look at him and see everything that promise was worth.

Every early morning. Every late night. Every sacrifice. Every moment I chose to show up, even when I didn’t have the blueprint myself.

And to every woman in this community, especially the mothers carrying more than most people will ever see, I want you to know that I see you.

Whether you’re raising children with support or doing it on your own, what you’re building matters more than you know.
