You want to grow on YouTube. But also make a website. But also grow an email list. But also start a community. But also write a book. And maybe start another YouTube channel because for some reason the first one couldn't do exactly what you wanted.

Sound familiar?

I just met someone who had this exact problem. They wanted to turn all this into a real income stream, but weren't sure how to tie everything together.

This is what I said:

"You gotta start somewhere, and even if you feel like you haven't made progress towards your main goal, the work you have done so far has helped you build skills you are going to need to get there!

What is your main offer? Who are you trying to help?

If you don't mind some unsolicited advice... 🙂

✅ first thing is to get crystal clear on your offer. this doesn't have to be complicated. simple is best. "I help people overcome a fear of public speaking. If you were always quiet in class, this is for you."

✅ second thing would be to share some proof / your own story, and describe it viscerally in a way that your ideal audience member can identify with. "I always struggled with speaking in front of others. When a teacher called on me in class, I would tense up and couldn't bring myself to say much of anything. I felt embarrassed for the words I hadn't even said yet. And when I did speak, I didn't sound confident. I didn't say what I really wanted to. I thought I would never be able to speak up, until one day I realized what was really going on."

✅ then talk about the way you solved the problem for yourself and what you learned along the way. talk about books you read or videos you watched or a mentor that helped you shift your mindset. Talk about the epiphany moments or transformative moments in your journey.

then let people know how you can help them. your offer points them to a resource that they "pay" for, either with their money, or with their time and attention. That could be:

🔵 your youtube channel (watch this video to learn the steps I took to overcome xyz)

🟠 an e-book or PDF (enter your email here and I'll send you the 7 steps I took to break out of my comfort zone)

🟣 a 1-on-1 call (coaching, mentorship, whatever you want to call it); start with a free call for the first 3 to 5 people. This gives you data (are people booking the free call? If not, tweak your offer) and experience. Then start charging for the call.

And like many people have said here already, simplify! One audience, one platform, one offer, and do that for one year. You will learn a lot in the process, and probably make some money too!

Tbh, I was shocked to see this…

I recently posted a video about a new microphone I bought to improve my audio for YouTube videos. I borrowed elements from similar successful videos in terms of the title and thumbnail…

But alas. 50 views later, I’m thinking that YouTube has forgotten that I like to talk about YouTube (maybe because I haven’t talked about it in a while!)

Now between this channel and a few others, I have published over 100 videos to YouTube in the last two years. Some do better than others, that’s just how it goes!

It can be frustrating when you think a video will really resonate with viewers, but then it fails to pop off as expected.

One question you may be asking yourself is, “do I need to pick a niche right away?” And there are two main camps here:

1) No, just start making videos and your niche will develop over time, and

2) Yes, having a clear niche in mind is the best way for the YouTube algorithm to help you find an audience

And the truth is… both are correct. 🤷‍♂️

If you don’t have a lot of experience with filming videos, editing, making thumbnails, writing titles, and all the other little skills that go into being a YouTube, AND you aren’t sure about your niche? Then I say don’t worry about your niche just yet. You really just need to get started and experience what it takes to create and upload videos start to finish. Experiment with different video topics, different audio/video recording setups, different formats (ex. Talking Head, Video Essay, Faceless Videos, Video Podcast, Street Interviews, etc) and figure out what you like making. Every video you finish and publish to YouTube is a repetition, and if you get some reps in, you will improve.

Now if you have a clear niche in mind, I 100% agree the second camp above, that starting with a clear niche will help you grow an audience faster, but there are a lot of examples of creators developing their niche over time and still succeeding because A) they grew into a niche eventually, and B) they didn’t give up, they kept publishing more videos and improving.
