USB vs XLR — Which Should Creators Start With?

I’ve been getting some great feedback on my recent video about USB mics vs traditional setups. The big question is: what’s the best starting point for creators—simplicity or full control?

New Video + Giveaway!

Just dropped a review of the Maono DM40 — a budget mic that shouldn’t sound this good.
It’s clean, wireless, plug-and-play… but there’s one catch (especially for Mac users).

🎙️ Watch the full video here:

And yep — I’m giving it away.
If you’re in the U.S., all you have to do is:

1. Watch the video
2. Spot the secret phrase
3. Comment the timestamp to enter

I'll randomly pick one person and ship it out. Let’s get this mic into someone else’s hands who could use it.

I just dropped a new video about my 9-year journey as a creator—and all the gear I’ve bought, sold, and finally made peace with.

From the Canon SL2 to the Sony FX3 and Fujifilm X-H2S… I’ve gone through three full waves of collecting and purging camera gear.

This video isn’t just about cameras.
It’s about learning when to let go, when to upgrade, and how to create with intention instead of overwhelm.

🎥 Whether you’re just starting out or deep in your creative grind, I think you’ll relate to this one

💬 Question for you:
How many times have you “started over” with your gear?
And what’s the one piece of gear that truly changed how you create?

Let’s talk below 👇

My Everyday Carry (EDC) for 2025: Creativity On the Go

Your everyday carry isn't just a random collection of items—it's a carefully curated setup designed to keep you prepared, creative, and productive, no matter where life takes you. As we step into 2025, I want to share the essential gear that helps me balance content creation, workdays, and everything in between.

Tech Essentials: Powering My Workflow

My MacBook Pro is the core of my workflow, handling everything from virtual meetings and administrative tasks to heavy-duty video editing and creative work in DaVinci Resolve. When I need something more portable, my iPad Pro is my go-to for content ideation, photo editing, and light tasks.

Of course, my iPhone 13 Pro is always within reach—not just for communication but also for quick snapshots, social media management, and staying connected. Rounding out my tech essentials, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 keeps me on schedule and in sync during my busiest days.

Camera Gear: Capturing the Story

When it comes to photography and videography, my Sony A7 IV is the heart of my setup. It delivers exceptional image quality and versatility, making it perfect for both client work and personal projects. My go-to lenses include:

Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 – Perfect for versatility, covering everything from portraits to detailed shots.

Viltrox 20mm f/2.8 – A wide-angle lens that’s ideal for vlogging and storytelling.

For audio, I rely on NearStream Wireless Mics for vlogging, as they isolate my voice exceptionally well, even in noisy environments. When I need more natural sound or I'm filming talking headshots, I switch to the Deity D3 Pro Shotgun Mic for professional audio clarity.

Stability is crucial for cinematic shots, so I use a SmallRig Half Cage and the Ulanzi Mini Tripod for lightweight, on-the-go shooting. On windier days in Chicago, the Peak Design Travel Tripod is my go-to for extra stability.

Accessories: Elevating the Workflow

Accessories can make or break your creative process. My Freewell M2 Filter System helps me control light and maintain a cinematic look, no matter the conditions. Power is everything when you're constantly on the move, so I always carry:

Anker Battery – Perfect for everyday iPhone charging.

INUI P63 100W Power Bank – A lifesaver for my MacBook Pro and iPad Pro, ensuring I never run out of juice mid-edit.

For storage, my SanDisk 2TB SSD keeps my files safe, backed up, and always accessible. Everything fits neatly into my WANDRD PRVKE 21L Camera Bag, which is sleek, durable, and designed for creators on the go. I also keep two notebooks and pens for jotting down ideas, notes, and to-do lists.

And, of course, my wallet is an everyday essential. I specifically carry one with a money clip because if you're in a city like Chicago (or any big city), it’s always smart to have at least $20 in cash—just in case you find yourself in an unexpected situation.

Why My EDC Matters

For me, my EDC is all about balance. It ensures I have everything I need to stay creative, productive, and efficient without feeling weighed down. Whether I’m shooting, editing, or planning my next big project, this setup keeps me ready for whatever the day brings.

If you enjoy my content and want to support my work, consider buying me a coffee! Every contribution helps me create more content, test new gear, and share my journey with you all. Your support truly means the world. ☕💡

🎧 Why Audio Matters More Than Video 🎥

Camera companies have been competing for over a decade to deliver the best consumer-grade cameras with top-tier video quality. But in 2024, with the release of the Lumix GH7, we’re seeing a shift—this camera prioritizes audio quality just as much as video.

As much as I love cameras, I firmly believe that audio quality > video quality. A visually stunning film with terrible sound is nearly unwatchable, but even low-quality visuals with crisp, clear audio can still be engaging.

👀 Think about it:
Have you ever clicked away from a video because the audio was garbage—even if the footage looked amazing? You’re not alone. That’s why investing in the right microphone is a game-changer for content creators.

In my latest video, I test out the Neewer Pencil Condenser Mics, which let you switch the pickup pattern with interchangeable capsules—perfect for handling different recording situations. These budget-friendly mics punch way above their price, making them a killer option for creators who want pro-level audio without breaking the bank.

🔥 Powering Up My Rig: Neewer Mini V-Mount Battery Review 🔥

The Neewer Mini V-Mount Battery has become a permanent part of my camera rig, and for good reason. Its compact size, reliable performance, and versatile ports make it perfect for run-and-gun filmmaking, interviews, and extended shoots.

✅ Dual DC Ports – Great for powering an additional key or fill light.
✅ USB-A & USB-C Ports – Perfect for charging accessories like phones and tablets.
✅ 99Wh Capacity – Air travel safe, a huge plus for mobile creators.
✅ 65W USB-C PD – Can even charge laptops while powering your camera.

⚠️ Drawbacks?
While it’s fantastic for small to mid-sized rigs, I noticed faster drainage when powering multiple accessories (camera, monitor, follow focus, iPad, and iPhone). To avoid this, I now keep an internal battery in my camera and use the USB-C port strategically.

Also, the single D-Tap port feels limiting, but this is easily solved with a D-Tap splitter if you need more connections.

💡 Final Thoughts:
If you’re rigging up cameras like the Sony FX3, Fujifilm X-H2S, or FujiFilm X-H2, this is a solid investment. I’m already planning to pick up a second one.

⭐️ Final Rating: 4.7/5
What would you rate this battery? Let me know below! ⬇️

Is the Sony FX3 the Only Camera You’ll Ever Need?

The FX3 sits in a unique spot—it’s got the A7S III’s legendary low-light sensor but in a cinema-ready body. No overheating, no record limits, and built-in cooling. It’s designed for filmmakers who need pro-level video features without the bulk of a full cinema rig.

Although... When you rig-it out it's a baby FX6...

Why does it stand out?

12MP Full-Frame Sensor – Unmatched in low light, perfect for clean, noise-free footage.

Compact, Fan-Cooled Body – Reliable for long shoots, no overheating issues.

Cinematic Controls – Dedicated buttons, tally lights, dual record options.

Rig-Ready – Barebones or fully built out, it adapts to your workflow.

E-Mount Flexibility – Use everything from affordable primes to high-end cinema lenses.

If you’re shooting commercial work, documentaries, or indie films, the FX3 is a powerhouse. But if you’re mainly creating for social, the A7III or even a ZV-series camera might be enough.

So, is this really the only camera you need? Let’s break it down—full video Tuesday, March 11, 2025 at 9am.
