𝗠𝗲𝗴𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝘀 was an 𝗜𝗖𝗨 𝗻𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 at Brigham and Women’s Hospital who cared for Lindsay Clancy after Clancy was transferred there following the January 24, 2023 incident. Collins described Clancy as being critically ill and medically unstable when she took over her care.

* Clancy was extremely medically compromised. Collins described caring for a patient who had suffered major traumatic injuries, including a severe spinal injury, chest injuries, blood loss, and injuries to her neck and wrists. Clancy had been intubated and was receiving intensive medical support.
* Clancy had suffered a cardiac arrest. Collins received report about the cardiac arrest and the seriousness of Clancy’s condition. The ICU team had to provide extensive intervention to keep her alive.
* Initially, Clancy was heavily sedated and minimally responsive. Collins explained that her limited responses were consistent with the sedation and severity of her condition rather than necessarily indicating a neurological problem.
* Her neurological responses were monitored closely. Collins testified that Clancy’s eyes were open at one point and that her pupils were equal and reactive to light. Collins said there wasn’t an obvious sign from those observations of a major brain injury.
* After the breathing tube was removed, Clancy became confused and agitated. Collins described Clancy pulling at IV lines and other medical equipment. Staff ultimately had to restrain her to prevent her from removing lifesaving lines and drains.
* Collins characterized this as ICU delirium. The confusion/agitation occurred after an extremely serious period of illness, intubation, sedation and critical-care treatment, and Collins testified that it improved over the following days.
* Clancy was considered a suicide risk. Collins testified that Clancy was kept under constant, one-on-one observation while in the ICU.

Why her testimony mattered

Collins’s testimony was primarily medical/observational, rather than testimony about what Clancy was thinking when she killed her children. It gave the jury a picture of Clancy’s physical and neurological condition immediately afterward.

One important point is that confusion and agitation after extubation were presented in the context of ICU delirium, rather than as proof by itself that Clancy was experiencing postpartum psychosis. That’s relevant because the central issue in the trial is whether Clancy was criminally responsible for the killings, with the defense arguing that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and other severe mental illness.
