Maya Angelou’s wisdom is known for being deep, compassionate, and empowering. She taught that strength comes from honesty, self-respect, and kindness, even in the face of hardship. Her words often emphasize resilience, reminding people that pain and failure do not define them—how they rise does. She also believed strongly in the power of words, encouraging people to speak with courage and live with empathy, because how we treat others leaves a lasting impact.

Today is World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day — a global moment to honor those who lead with compassion, service, and humanity. ❤️

Observed on the birthday of founder Mr. Henry Dunant, May 8th 1948, this day recognizes the millions of volunteers and humanitarian workers around the world who show up in times of crisis — offering care, relief, and hope when it’s needed most.

This year’s theme, “Keeping Humanity Alive,” reminds us that even in the face of conflict, disaster, and uncertainty, compassion remains one of our greatest strengths.

Dr. Maya Angelou once reminded us of the dignity and humanity we all share, and the responsibility we carry to care for one another.

❤️ How do you show up for others?

In a BBC interview, Dr. Maya Angelou shared a simple yet profound truth: “Love heals… her love healed me.”

The relationship with her mother was not always easy. After being separated from her mother at a young age, Dr. Angelou carried pain, distance, and unanswered questions. But over time, through patience, understanding, and grace, that relationship transformed.

In her memoir “Mom & Me & Mom”, she reflects on that journey, from abandonment to reconciliation, from hurt to healing, revealing how she learned not only to love her mother but to understand her.

And in that understanding, she found something deeper: compassion, forgiveness, and the strength to love more fully, including as a mother to her own son

Motherhood is not perfect. Relationships are not always simple. But love — when nurtured — has the power to restore what once felt broken.

💛 Today, we honor every version of motherhood.
💛 The healing. The growth. The becoming.

Happy Mother’s Day! 💐

The 10th Annual African American Partnership Luncheon offered a powerful close to Black History Month, a gathering of nearly 700 leaders committed to strengthening communities and expanding opportunity for our youth. The Dr. Maya Angelou Foundation was honored to serve as a sponsor for this year’s event, standing alongside partners who share our belief in the transformative power of education, equity, inclusion, and collective action..

Featured guest, Boris Kodjoe reminded us that affirmation begins within: “Love yourself when the world reflects the opposite to you." His words echo Dr. Angelou’s lifelong message about courage, dignity, and the unshakeable truth of one’s own worth.

Milton J. Little, Jr., President and CEO of United Way of Greater Atlanta, offered a charge that aligns deeply with our mission: our collective responsibility to power potential. This call to action reflects the heart of our work, ensuring that young people have the support, resources, and encouragement they need to rise.

Partnership has always been central to Dr. Angelou’s legacy. She believed in what becomes possible when communities come together with purpose and conviction. That belief continues to guide our efforts as we invest in students, uplift Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and expand pathways to opportunity.

As we close Black History Month, we carry forward the spirit of today's gathering: honoring the past, celebrating the present, and building a future where every young person can see their own brilliance reflected back at them.

Inspired by Dr. Maya Angelou’s “Phenomenal Woman,” #PhenomenalFriday honors women whose strength, grace, and courage have shaped history — and sustained movements through love and loss.

Today, we spotlight Dr. Betty Shabazz, an educator, civil rights advocate, and steadfast keeper of Malcolm X’s legacy. Beyond her public role, Dr. Shabazz was a woman of profound kindness, resilience, and purpose — raising a family, teaching future generations, and continuing the fight for justice in the face of immense personal tragedy.

A beloved friend and confidante of Dr. Maya Angelou, Dr. Shabazz shared a deep sisterhood with Dr. Angelou, rooted in mutual respect, compassion, and unwavering strength. Dr. Angelou honored her as a “strong,” “selfless,” and loving woman — one whose absence left a permanent seam. undone.

Her legacy reminds us that courage is not only loud — it is enduring. 🖤✨

Black history lives through voice, memory, and meaning. Throughout Black History Month, we honor Maya Angelou “in her own words” by exploring how her voice continues to teach us through poetry, personal history, and moments of truth.

“My folks can make me split my sides.”
— from When I Think About Myself (1971), Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water ’Fore I Diiie

In this poem, humor carries history. Angelou reflects on generations of Black survival — where laughter coexists with pain and joy becomes a way to endure, remember, and resist. Written during the Civil Rights era, her words honor a tradition of wit and resilience that sustained Black communities through injustice.

Her poetry reminds us that Black history is not only shaped by struggle, but by brilliance, humanity, and the power to keep going.

💐 Today, we open Women’s History Month by honoring the power, resilience, and brilliance of women, past, present, and future..

This month-long observance originated in grassroots advocacy and became a national designation in 1987, created to uplift women whose contributions have too often gone unseen. It is both a celebration and a call to continue the work toward equity, dignity, and justice.

We begin with “Phenomenal Woman,” Dr. Maya Angelou’s timeless declaration of self-worth, confidence, and unapologetic womanhood. The poem reminds us that society’s narrow standards do not define power, but by the quiet strength, grace, and knowing we carry within ourselves.

As Dr. Angelou wrote,
“I’m a woman / Phenomenally. / Phenomenal. woman, / That’s me.”

This Women’s History Month, we celebrate women who lead boldly, love fiercely, and stand firmly in who they are—phenomenal, just as they are.

✨ Happy Women’s History Month ✨
