Seeing many fish gather at the surface does not automatically mean they are hungry. They may be responding to feeding cues, but persistent surface crowding or gasping may also indicate:

๐Ÿ’ง Low dissolved oxygen
๐ŸŒก๏ธ High water temperature
๐ŸŸ Overcrowding
โš ๏ธ Poor water quality

Observe their breathing, swimming pattern, appetite, and water conditions before drawing a conclusion.

Fish behavior tells a storyโ€”we just need to learn how to read it. ๐Ÿ”๐ŸŸ

DID YOU KNOW? | You can โ€œcallโ€ Nile tilapia to eat!

Ever noticed tilapia rushing toward you after a familiar knock on the tank, pond, or cage?

Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) can learn to associate a repeated sound or vibrationโ€”such as knocking on the side of the pond, tank, or cageโ€”with feeding time. Through conditioning, that familiar cue can trigger them to gather near the feeding area, ready for their meal. ๐Ÿ”Š๐ŸŸ

Itโ€™s a simple example of fish learning and behavior happening right before our eyes.

So next time you see someone knocking before feeding their tilapia, they might not just be making noiseโ€”theyโ€™re calling the tilapia eat!

You can try it too.

Can Nile Tilapia be called the โ€œChameleon of the Water"?

YESโ€”kind of! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

Nile tilapia can change its body coloration depending on its surroundings, stress, mood, social interactions, and environment. This can help it blend in and communicate with other fish.

๐ŸฆŽ Chameleon: Famous for changing colors
๐ŸŸ Nile Tilapia: Can also change coloration underwater!

So, while tilapia isn't a true aquatic chameleon, calling it the โ€œChameleon of the Waterโ€ makes for a fun comparison!

Did you know this about tilapia? ๐Ÿค”

When Nile Tilapia Falls in Loveโ€ฆ It Blushes!

Did you know? Male Nile tilapia can develop a more reddish coloration during breeding and courtship.

So, in a fun way, we can say:

โ€œMale Nile tilapia blushes when in love!โ€ ๐Ÿ˜

It may not be love in the human sense, but that beautiful reddish color is part of their breeding behavior.

According to the FAO, an estimated 645 million people experienced hunger in 2026. As the fastest-growing animal food production sector, aquaculture has become indispensable to global food security. By supplying affordable, nutritious aquatic foods, generating employment, supporting rural livelihoods, and reducing pressure on wild fish stocks, aquaculture is helping meet the nutritional needs of a growing population.

As demand for healthy and sustainable protein continues to rise, the responsible growth of aquaculture will remain essential in building resilient food systems and advancing the goal of Zero Hunger. Every innovation and every sustainable farming practice brings us one step closer to a more food-secure future. ๐ŸŒ๐ŸŸ

Are You Measuring Dissolved Oxygen (DO) at the Right Depth in Your Lake Fish Cages?

Dissolved oxygen (DO) is one of the most critical water quality parameters affecting fish health, growth, and survival. Measuring DO at only the surface may not give the full picture.

For accurate monitoring, measure DO at:
โ€ข 0.5 m below the surface
โ€ข Mid-depth of the cage
โ€ข 0.5 m above the cage bottom

Best times to measure:
โ€ข Early morning (lowest DO)
โ€ข Late afternoon (highest DO)

Maintaining DO levels above 5 mg/L helps support healthy fish growth and reduces stress.

โ€ข Regular DO monitoring helps prevent fish kills, improve feed efficiency, and optimize aquaculture production.

Aquaculture is the Future.

Aquaculture is more than just fish farmingโ€”it's a sustainable solution for feeding a growing population while protecting our natural fisheries. By embracing responsible aquaculture, we can strengthen food security, create livelihoods, and ensure healthy aquatic resources for future generations.

The future of fisheries lies in sustainable aquaculture.
