Finish the story.

This is a great little exercise my sister told me about that I have been using any time I am struggling with a destructive inner monologue. If you find yourself constantly thinking about bad memories and times you made an ass out of yourself.... finish the story.

Example: "Today at work I totally embarrassed myself in front of that girl I like.... and then I went home and made a sandwich and went to sleep"

It's a great way to stop obsessing over the little things. Our brains hold onto negative memories much more than positive ones. Any time you can spin the memory in a positive light it is much easier for your mind to simply let it go.
