Dog Psychology 101

Dogs don’t need more training. They need better understanding.

I’m Angie Woods, a world-renowned dog psychologist and founder of Dog Psychology 101. For nearly four decades, including 17 years in veterinary medicine and more than 20 years leading U.S. Canine, I’ve helped thousands of dogs and their humans overcome fear, anxiety, leash reactivity, aggression, and other serious behavior problems.

This is not ordinary dog training. This is dog psychology.

I teach you how dogs think, feel, communicate, and respond to the human on the other end of the leash. Through real rehabilitation cases and practical education, you’ll learn calm leadership, clear communication, structure, emotional balance, and relationship skills that create meaningful change.

Balance the Human + Rehab the Dog = Happy Life!

Why does your dog become reactive on leash?

Leash reactivity isn't always about aggression.

Sometimes it’s your dog responding to excitement, frustration, uncertainty, or something much closer to home: you.

Dogs are extraordinarily perceptive. They pick up on our emotional shifts, body language, tension, and even changes in our scent.

And then there’s trust.

If your dog doesn't truly trust you to handle what’s happening around them, the leash can become a very different experience.

This is why I look beyond the behavior itself.

The barking, lunging, pulling, and reacting are the visible part of the conversation. What’s happening underneath is where we need to look.

Swipe through and let’s look at some of the reasons leash reactivity occurs.

And if you want to go deeper into the way dogs perceive the world and the information they receive from us, The Secret Conversation is waiting for you.

QUESTION FOR DOG LOVERS...

If your dog could describe their personality in ONE word, what would it be?

🐾 Social?
🐾 Sensitive?
🐾 Lazy?
🐾 Mischievous?

I've spent nearly 40 years helping people understand their dogs, and one thing I've learned is this:

Behavior makes a lot more sense when you understand personality first.

That's why I created the Dogenality℠ Dog Personality Test.

It helps uncover how your dog naturally experiences the world so you can stop guessing and start understanding.

Drop your one-word description below 👇

I'd love to see how closely it matches their Dogenality℠ type! 🐾

You can’t truly help your dog… until you understand your dog.
Most people are trying to fix behavior.

Fix the barking.
Fix the reactivity.
Fix the anxiety.

But behavior isn’t where the real work starts.

👉 Understanding is.

After 37+ years working with dogs, I’ve seen this over and over again:

Dogs don’t need more commands.
They need clarity.
They need consistency.
They need someone who understands what they’re actually experiencing.

And that starts with us.

Because without a shift in the human…
the dog has nothing new to respond to.

Confidence doesn’t just come from the dog “learning better behavior.”
It comes from both of you starting to understand each other.

👉 That’s where real change happens.

Not forcing.
Not correcting endlessly.
Not guessing.

Understanding.

What’s something your dog does that you’ve been trying to “fix”… but haven’t fully understood yet?

👇 Let’s talk about it

Dog Psychology 101

You live in an unsmelled world according to your dog.
Let that sit for a second.
We're the ones with thumbs. We built the leash, set the schedule, choose the food, control when they go outside. We have all the power in this relationship.
And we are navigating almost all of it through a completely human lens — while our dogs are navigating it through something we can barely imagine.
Dogs are not a verbal species. Beyond barking — and yes, there are different types with different meanings — whining and growling, they don't communicate in language. Words are sounds. What looks like your dog understanding "sit" is your dog learning a specific sound paired with consistent consequence and the expectation your body telegraphs every single time. Your tone carries more information than your vocabulary. Your body carries more than your tone.
And your scent carries more than all of it combined.
Here's what science has confirmed — and what I've watched play out in the field for 37 years. When you feel fear, anxiety, or stress, your body's sympathetic nervous system triggers the release of adrenaline. That activates your apocrine glands — concentrated in areas like your underarms — producing a chemically distinct sweat that carries specific volatile compounds into the air. These are not imaginary signals. They are real, measurable, durable molecules. Research has shown they persist in the environment long after the person has left the room.
Your dog's nose — with 125 to 300 million olfactory receptors compared to our 6 million — detects all of it. And it goes straight to the amygdala. Their brain's emotional center. The part that processes fear, threat, and survival.
The eyes and ears are there too — watching your posture, reading your facial expression, catching the shake in your voice. But they are there to confirm what the nose already knows. Scent is first. Everything else backs it up.
Your emotional state is not private. It never has been. Not to your dog.
The anxiety you carry into a walk — your dog felt it before you picked up the leash. The frustration you're holding — they read it before you said a word. The calm you genuinely feel versus the calm you're performing — they know the difference. You cannot fake it for the nose.
So while you've been trying to figure out what's wrong with your dog, your dog has had a complete and accurate read on you the whole time.
That's not a criticism. That's an invitation.
Because here's what I know after 37 years on both ends of this leash: when people begin to genuinely understand how their dog perceives the world — and become willing to modify their own behavior accordingly — the dog in front of them often changes faster than they thought possible.
I've never had a dog I couldn't help.
I have had people I couldn't help.
The difference was never love. It was always willingness.
Balance the Human + Rehab the Dog = Happy Life.
That's not a slogan. That's a diagnosis. And it starts with understanding the species you're actually living with.
