The films with which we grew up are often not the same anymore. With each passing time and every fresh viewing of films, we come upon a serious contemplation of the director’s art. The discussion is not about his Calcutta trilogy (Pratidwandi, 1970; Seemabaddha, 1971; and Jana Aranya, 1975), where he was undoubtedly more overtly political. But about Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne (The singer and drummer) (1969) and Heerak Rajar Deshe (The Kingdom of Diamonds) (1980), where he was more subtle and cerebral than today’s loud propaganda films.

Years after Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne and Heerak Rajar Deshe were made, we see how they have been immersed in today’s political idioms. So much so that even lines from the movie are made into posters whenever the country raises its voice. This is indeed a surprising fact about Ray, who himself never wore his politics on his sleeve. Aparna Sen once said that Ray’s politics were not the politics of political parties that were constantly at each other’s throats.

The reason behind the synonymy of his childlike films with today’s politics is that Ray knew that with children as his audience, he could never thrust anything down their throats. His political message is not picked up from the jargon of a Statesman newspaper but through images, hints, ironies, and metaphors that never come in the way of the entertainment aspect of the narrative. His ideology is like that of the conscience of a child who can distinguish between justice and injustice.

He knew that his audience would understand that Shundi, despite being a utopia with a benevolent king, cannot be called a democracy unless the people of the kingdom gain their voice. How the famished soldiers of Halla are oppressed by their puppet king under the evil minister. Heerak Rajar Deshe, despite being a satire on Indira Gandhi’s emergency regime, can be relevant in the current day and age. Today we can identify the ‘Magaj Dholai’ machine (brainwash) with media, YouTube channels, and WhatsApp University and find Udayan Pandit within us with a blue mark on our index finger to overthrow a narcissist leader.

Why I don't like this Ghibli art trend:

Like any other creator, I also try some trends. Therefore you see some of it down here. But I want to put it plainly that I am not a big fan of AI generated images.

Miyazaki hand made those comics and hated AI. Using AI to make something that is his own pain-staking creation when he hates AI is not a good way to go about it.

Also I just don't get the fad. The characters in that artform are distinct enough from each other, but resemblance is absolutely not there. (The last pic is taken from an Instagram profile. The other two pictures are AI generated.)
