My thoughts on episode four and what people are saying about Vox and Alastor (YES I WROTE A WHOLE ESSAY ABOUT IT) (Episode 4, season two spoilers ahead)








Intro- There are some conflicting opinions about Hazbin Hotel season two, episode four. I’m going to explain both sides as equally as I can, but, I’m human, my opinions might influence me even when I don’t realize. Once I have fully explained the points from both “sides”, I will state my opinion and why I hold it. The last main section is going to be some opinions/reactions that aren’t ok, no matter what “side” you’re on.

Vox positive/Alastor negative arguments- Here, I’ll talk about points made on both Alastor and Vox’s “sides”, starting with Vox. I noticed that most people on “Vox’s side” aren’t defending Vox other than “Alastor rejected him by laughing in his face and it hurt him”. They are also arguing that Alastor broke his heart because it’s heavily implied that Vox had feelings for Alastor. Alastor also willingly gave up his freedom and let Vox take him. He also used “Think of the headlines!” as an incentive to take the deal, meaning he expected to be publicly humiliated. Some argue that people shouldn’t sympathize with Alastor because he is a serial killer and enjoys people’s pain and suffering. Serial killers are still sentenced to the electric chair for their crimes in some states in the US, so people are justifying Vox electrocuting him.

Alastor positive Vox negative arguments- Now, onto the Alastor-positive arguments. There are a few more points on Alastor’s “side”, and these points aren’t against Vox, they’re for Alastor. The first couple points are related, so I’ll be talking about them together. People are saying that Alastor only made his deal with Vox to save Nifty, Husk, and Charlie, he didn’t want to be taken prisoner. He didn’t EXPECT to be SAed, he expected to be humiliated, he even said “Think of the headlines”. What Vox did IS considered SA, even if he didn’t touch him. He did not consent to watching Vox and Valentino or be flashed by Vox. Some are saying that it was worse for Alastor because he’s asexual, but that situation would be uncomfortable for anyone, no matter their sexuality. People also argue that serial killers do get the electric chair, but alastor wasn’t killed, he was tortured by Vox for sadistic pleasure, not as a punishment for his crimes. Vox, as we know, was a cult leader and most likely also killed people. People arguing that Alastor was wrong for laughing in Vox’s face point out that he spent his whole life doing things on his own and not needing help, viewing seeking assistance as weak. He probably wanted to work with Vox but didn’t want to appear weak by having his help, so he shifted the weakness onto Vox. Vox “revenge” for what Alastor did to him did not equal what Alastor actually did to him.

My opinion- Here is where I give my opinion on these scenes and what I think about the episode in general, keep in mind that these are just my opinions and you are welcome to (respectfully) discuss your own opinions. I know that Alastor laughing in Vox’s face was not ok, but I agree with the defence that Alastor most likely got to where he was without others’ help (excluding his deal with Rosie) and genuinely viewed asking for help as weak. I’m not saying that was he did was ok, but I don’t this he did it just to be an asshole. Now, for his deal with Vox, I think he actually WANTED to be taken hostage by Vox, but I don’t think he planned for Nifty and Husk to show up. He decided to make a deal to protect them along with Charlie instead of being taken “against his will”. I think he did this to appear weak intentionally, so that Rosie would be forced to give him his power back to hold up her end of the deal. I do agree that Alastor is not a good person. He IS a serial killer, but nobody deserves to be SAed. Vox didn’t even electrocute Alastor for his crimes, he did it for his own pleasure. To people arguing that we shouldn’t feel sympathy for a serial killer, again, Vox was a cult leader and probably also killed people when he was alive. Not to mention, the show is based in Hell, there WILL be bad people there, the entire cast has killed at least one person, counting the extermination angels and when Vaggie made them fight other sinners to trust each other (killing the angels was in self defence, but we don’t know why Alastor killed yet). People defending Vox don’t have any right to say that Alastor is completely the bad guy here, Vox endorses and doesn’t care about Valentino’s abusive behaviors towards Angel and his other employees, he even thinks it’s funny. In my opinion, r*pe and SA are worse than murder, they stay with you for the rest of your life, while being murdered just ends your life.
They are both terrible, I’m not saying murder is ok, but you can’t say that Alastor is a terrible person and Vox is a “sweet boy”, when they are both bad people.

Unreasonable/disturbing reactions- This section might be a bit triggering or uncomfortable, so feel free to skip to the next paragraph if you are uncomfortable with people justifying SA. I’ve seen a few people saying genuinely gross things about these scenes, One person said “I mean, he was sent to Hell and got tortured, in my opinion this is normal and honestly wasn’t enough”. I do agree that suffering is the point of being sent to Hell, but the show isn’t black and white, Alastor isn’t 100% terrible, aka, the whole point of season one- sinners aren’t completely bad and angels aren’t completely good. I’m not saying Alastor should be doing whatever he wants and should have a wonderful life, he did kill and eat people. The part that really ticks me off is when they said it “normal and honestly wasn’t enough”. Getting SAed, no matter who you are or what you did should NEVER be normalized, it's actually scary to see this opinion, to see that real people are justifying SA. Saying that it “Wasn’t enough”, I mean, I don’t even know what to say, I think being SAed is way more extreme than he “needed”, I don’t see why this is actually an argument or discussion, I thought it would be common sense that what Vox did was disgusting and not ok.

My theories for the next episode- If you want to walk into the next episode completely blind, I suggest you don’t watch this next section. For the next episode, we know that it’s called “Silenced”, the preview picture has Lucifer, and that it’s the only 18+ episode of this season (it’s 16+ now, but when I wrote this it was 18+ 😭). Some people were theorizing based off of screenshots from the trailer that Lucifer would be hypnotized by Vox. Based on that information, I think Charlie will send Lucifer to save Alastor from Vox and end up hypnotized. He has depression, he still misses his wife, he would do anything for Charlie, and Jeremy Jordan said “Lucifer is a bit gullible”. Now, that doesn’t mean he will get hypnotized, Jeremy didn’t LEAK anything, this could mean something completely different, like he believes something that isn’t true or he falls for a different trap set by the Vees/Vox. I’m really looking forward to this episode, but I’m also worried, Alastor is still Vox’s prisoner at least at the beginning of the episode, and it was already hard to see my comfort character go through all of that.

Also, alternate theory: Charlie is really pissed that Lucifer pushed Alastor away so now he’s going to save Alastor to get his dad points back and that’s where we see him setting the Vee tower on fire/him in his demon form. (IM SORRY I JUST REALLY WANT LUCIFER TO SAVE ALASTOR 💔)

(Also, if this is written a bit weird, it’s because this was supposed to be a script for a video but I don’t have time for recording + editing before tomorrow 😭)

I guess this is an unpopular opinion, but Alastor didn’t deserve what Vox did to him. Yeah, he rejected him in the worst way possible, but that doesn’t mean he deserves to be forced to watch Vox and Val, be publicly humiliated (which, honestly, he expected when he made the deal, so not as much ig?), and be tortured (electrocuted). I’m thinking about making a long-form video on this since I genuinely have so much to say abt it (other opinions are allowed, but do t just say “he deserved it”, I want an actual (friendly) argument with stuff to back it up)
