Welcome to the Queendom! I'm Sarah Ingle, basically your friendly neighborhood Rapunzel. Lately we've been on a quest to find the best and worst hair advice on the Internet. That quest evolved into our current series on the science of hair and busting haircare myths. Hope you'll join us!

How do I get hair info?
1. I read books by top hair researchers, watch their lectures, and ask them questions.
(I also read many published studies, but these three items come first to give context to interpret studies properly)
2. I have a Master of Science degree in Marketing -- but not the advertising kind. My graduate coursework and thesis focused on consumer research and statistics, which helped me learn to interpret & evaluate the quality of peer-reviewed studies.
3. I have my Hair Practitioner certification from the International Association of Trichologists (IAT).

I am *not* a cosmetic chemist and do not have a science PhD.

This is getting weird. Doctor says I have severe tendinitis in both hands & mild carpal tunnel on the right, but that’s not the weird part...
My hands got so swollen and painful this afternoon that teeny, tiny little red pin pricks started appearing in the creases on my right palm. Some of them I can wipe off?? It’s like tiny specks of blood are actually seeping out of my skin??? I don’t think that’s even possible so I don’t know what’s happening.
It happened earlier and I thought it was tiny crumbs or something — like the red seasoning on cooler ranch Doritos. But I was just icing my hands & when I took the ice off, there was more. While typing this (very slowly one-fingered left hand), I’m getting more on my palm, arm, between fingers, and on the back of my middle finger. The specks are so tiny that idk how much you can see them on a phone, but I’ll to try to show you.
But anyway... this is what’s taking so long. That & I’m usually slow because I go completely overboard with everything, which is how I got in this mess in the first place. If it’s any consolation, the next video will have an accurate (yet colorfully fun) 3D animation of what your hair cuticle looks like opening & closing. If would’ve known it’d make my hands ooze blood, I would’ve just used a regular picture. 😆 (maybe I still would’ve — making the ridiculously elaborate details is my favorite part).

Help, please. I have an unusual problem. Maybe you know how to solve it.
Nearly every waking moment, I’d been sitting at my computer editing for weeks. The muscle between my right thumb and index finger started hurting, and in the last few days, now both of my hands are stiff and in constant pain — even if I don’t move them. Not only do the muscles hurt, but my hands burn and itch.
It’s so bad that I am barely functioning enough to do basic, everyday things. I can hardly pick anything up. Holding my phone is hard — just typing this is taking forever & extremely uncomfortable at best. I can’t open anything that requires twisting the top, and even brushing little Furpunzel is painful.
Do you have any suggestions for what might help? I wouldn’t usually ask for medical advice from the Internet, but I’ve been trying to get an appointment for a doctor to look at them and nobody has even replied yet. I just want to be able to function in the meantime. Given all the time I’ve spent on my computer, I’d guess it’s probably carpal tunnel. I’ve tried ibuprofen, ice packs, hot pads (those were horrible & made my whole arm swell), stretches, and compression arm/wrist braces. I even stayed off my computer and didn’t edit at all yesterday to give my hands a break, but it didn’t help at all. And I can’t stay off indefinitely. I need to keep working on videos. You guys are amazing and always say to prioritize my own needs and you’ll be patient — and you are. The problem is, if videos don’t go out, I don’t make money, regardless of how patient and supportive all of you are.
Anyway, thanks in advance for any tips, ideas, etc. 💜🙏🏻 I appreciate you guys so much.

P.S. Probably won’t be typing full responses to as many of you as usual. Hurts to type, but I am reading all of your comments.

Furpunzel the cone head says thank you for your patience. 🐾 🐻‍❄️
Started working on the next video in January 🤯 It evolved into a way bigger project than originally anticipated, but I think you’ll like some new things we’re trying out in it... 😁 I’m still here, still working, still replying to your comments as always. 💜 Didn’t go anywhere — this video is just a bigger project than usual.

What kind of hair do you have?

Wanna know why so many hair experts disagree? There are different types of hair experts, each type has a unique perspective.

You have...
1. Cosmetic chemists & researchers: what most people think of when you say “hair scientist;” often have PhDs and focus on conducting studies and formulating products that care for the scalp and length of the hair
2. Trichologists: hair specialists that usually focus on helping people with hair problems, often the scalp and hair loss are a big emphasis; instead of a specific academic degree, usually require a certification program done through trichology organizations like the IAT (International Association of Trichologists); many trichologists also are hairdressers, but this additional training allows them to help people with more scalp and hair problems
3. Hairdressers / Hair stylists: the talented people who make our hair look amazing! They have to both be artists and know how hair works in order to get the results they want and maintain the health of our hair. They require cosmetology licenses (plus a ridiculous amount of practice and talent to master the art)
4. MDs, Dermatologists, etc. - Medical Doctors also have to learn about hair in med school. Similar perspective as trichologists but getting an MD so it’s just one part of MANY things they need to learn

Where does our info come from?
Category 1: chemistry and physics textbooks, recorded lectures from researchers, me annoying scientists with all my questions (possibly some studies, but studies mean nothing without context from books, courses, lectures, etc.)
Category 2: Back in November, I got my Hair Practitioner certificate from the International Association of Trichologists (see photo). This grounds a lot of my research, but I mostly got this to help with a series on hair loss I’m planning.
Category 3: I’m entirely useless here and know nothing.
Category 4: the hair part is similar to 2

Which categories do you want to see more? Would you guys like to see more from a hairdresser perspective? There’s a lot of that on YouTube already, but maybe you wanna see me and my brain stuffed full of theory make a fool of myself attempting to style hair in any half-decent way. 😬

You guys requested captions in more languages, so I just added Spanish and Hindi to the first "Dry Hair" video. If you speak Spanish or Hindi, I'd love to know your opinion on the translations. They're not cheap to have translated, but if this place does a good job, I'd be glad to get them for the videos you guys like best so more people can learn about their hair.

Would you rather have an edited video or do a live stream for the Dry/Moisturized Hair Part 2? I made a list of your questions from Part 1 that I’ll answer either way. The edited video would be better organized and you could see graphics & pictures about how things work. If we stream, I can answer any new questions you guys have live.

Putting the finishing touches on a hair video that has taken a month of research. You guys get to see what I’ve been working on all this time tomorrow! 🥳 It disproves some popular hair ideas, so I’m a little concerned it may make some people mad. 😳 Probably not you guys tho — if you’re loyal enough to read my community posts, then you probably love busting hair myths. 💜

Okay 2020. 😰 Had to evacuate due to fires, so even though a video is almost ready, I don’t know when I’ll be able to post it. 😕 Thanks for your patience (as always), you guys! ❤️
