For years before the Iran war, China was importing something like 11.5 million barrels of oil a day - more than France, the UK, and Germany combined. It was, by a wide margin, the biggest oil customer on Earth.
Then the war started. And China's imports fell off a cliff.
By May, they'd dropped to under 9 million barrels a day. By June, Chinese oil imports had crashed 41%.
Here's the thing, though - China wasn't rationing oil because it HAD to. It was CHOOSING not to compete for expensive oil.
Why?
Because for years it had been quietly filling an enormous set of storage tanks with cheap crude.
And where did they get this cheap crude from?
It was filling up on discounted, sanctioned oil from Russia and Iran - oil that Western buyers wouldn't touch.
And how did it pay for this forbidden oil?
With its own currency - the Yuan. The PetroYuan.
The Petrodollar - the great pillar of American power for over 50 years - is losing its stranglehold on global oil markets.
The PetroYuan system is already running at serious scale.
Russia's state oil giant Gazprom Neft has been settling its China-bound crude sales in yuan since 2015. By 2024, roughly 95% of all trade between China and Russia was being settled in yuan and roubles - not dollars.
Iranian oil, banned from the normal financial system entirely, still gets to China. Analysts estimate China now buys the large majority of Iran's oil exports - much of it shipped using a "dark fleet" of aging, barely-tracked tankers, with payment settled completely outside US banks.
China now has an entire alternate financial system - built specifically so that American sanctions stop being an automatic kill switch. Beijing can effectively say: "Accept yuan, and you keep access to the world's biggest customer - us."

The Currency Market, also known as the Foreign Exchange Market, Forex Market, or FX Market, is where money itself is bought and sold. And it’s worth more than $7 trillion per day.
Currencies are always moving against each other. And when people trade currencies, they’re buying one currency and selling another at the same time. That’s why currencies are quoted in pairs. You don’t just buy “the British Pound”. You buy the British Pound against something else.
You’re not just asking, “Will this currency go up?”
You’re asking, “Will this currency go up relative to another currency?”
That’s what makes currencies different from stocks. When you buy a stock, you’re buying a piece of a company. But when you trade currencies, you’re comparing economies.
Currencies are like a scoreboard for countries. They reflect interest rates, inflation, growth, trade, debt, politics, confidence, fear, and sometimes complete panic.

Trump's recent capture of Nicolás Maduro isn’t just about Venezuela’s politics — and it's not just about oil either.
Nor drugs, nor even silver.
It's also about lithium.
Countries like Venezuela, Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile hold the bulk of the world’s lithium reserves.
Why is this important?
Lithium is the metal that powers electric vehicles, batteries, and the future of energy.
Chinese firms already dominate much of the lithium supply chain, from mining investments to processing capacity, because China needs secure access to these critical minerals for its tech and energy sectors.
In a world scrambling for clean-energy minerals, whoever controls access to lithium is increasingly powerful — and what happens in Caracas, Buenos Aires, La Paz, and Santiago matters for the global energy transition.
And yes, you can invest in lithium, either directly through lithium mining companies, or through lithium and battery ETFs.

Thanks,
Charles
