In this project, I recreated the legendary VLИ-5 off-road tire — the classic 6.95-16 tractor-style tread originally designed for the VAZ-2121 Niva. Internationally known as Lada Niva, Lada Taiga (Germany & Austria), Lada Cossack (UK & Australia), and distributed in France by Lada Poch, this iconic 4x4 became a symbol of simple, rugged off-road engineering.
This RC-scale version captures the aggressive mud-focused tread pattern that made the original tire famous for snow and rural terrain performance. In the video, I demonstrate open mold casting with SLA 3D printed molds, vacuum degassing to reduce air bubbles, and precision silicone mixing for realistic scale RC trucks and crawlers.

Behind the scenes: How I get that "Factory Look" for RC Tires 🛠️

Many of you asked about the crisp details on my semi-trailer tires. The secret isn't just in the silicone — it's in the SLA 3D printed molds.

Why SLA instead of FDM for molds?

Zero layer lines: To get smooth sidewalls and sharp lettering, the mold surface must be perfect. Resin printing is the only way to achieve this.

Precision: It allows for complex tread patterns that would be impossible to clean up on an FDM print.

In my first video, I show the process of using these molds with a vacuum chamber to ensure a "No Bubbles" result. If you want to take your custom RC builds to the next level, this technique is a game changer!
