After seeing the movie "When Love Prays," I can only rate it 6/10. Reason with me.👇
Though the movie title sounds like the usual YouTube Nollywood stories, the storyline in this one is far different, and that’s what drew me to the movie. However, in a 9/10 movie, you realize that the majority of characters have their own stakes. In this movie, the writer focused only on resolving an inter-religious marriage clash.
Every other character was dominant but focused solely on the main conflict. This makes the movie unrealistic because, in real life, every family member has a personal struggle. Here, they only made passive mentions of personality without action. A movie is supposed to show and not tell like it’s a novel. Furthermore, the runtime was over 3 hours—which is insane and unnecessary for such a narrow focus.
2. Characterization: Aisha’s role at Mary Mother’s house was a bit of a contradiction. She initially stated she didn't come for a fight but immediately transitioned into warning an elderly woman. Religion and culture teach young girls manners; that act was more than just "reporting" a situation—it was a call for battle. This inconsistency makes it hard to root for the character's journey fully.
3. THEMATIC BIAS There was a noticeable imbalance in how the groups were portrayed, specifically presenting Christians as the "bad" or "troublesome" people. For a story about faith and love to be truly powerful, it needs nuance. When one side is painted as the sole source of friction, the story loses its depth and begins to feel biased. 5. THE PHILOSOPHICAL FLAW The movie is unrealistic because that’s the power of fiction, but this would not go over easily in real life. Love shouldn't put us in a fix where we must choose a partner over family, or vice versa. Both sides can fail, and if you burn your bridges, you have nowhere to go. Love should bring balance, peace, and joy. When it involves this much chaos, it becomes a nightmare.
6. Technicality: The camera quality, the sound, the interpretation of roles, the casts, the makeup and every things that makes up the a film are good.
This movie "Free Jemimah" would have eaten 6/10 from me, but I have to withhold some percentage and rate it a 4/10.
I would rate it 2/10, but because there has been a huge work and time invested already into this, I have to rate it a 4/10 because the storyline is a good one but the work of art is very disheartening.
Nollywood has grown above this level of production, and I see no reason an executive producer, a director, producer, makeup artist, etc, would allow an actor to go on set looking like she is battling with head swelling disease. Even stage 4 cancer patients don't look this way.
I was totally distracted from the movie, and all my focus was fixed on her head each time she appeared on the screen. I was just wondering what exactly was the problem only to realize it was makeup with her hair folded inside her head.
That scene, her hair was cut. It was only the upper part that was trimmed off. The makeup artist took over to pour thousands of makeup foundations on the head to match the skin. Yet, the blending turned out very poor because the lines were very visible.
I rate the makeup artist 2/10 I rate the director 3/10
This movie would have been a good one because it entails how our tradition treats women and how it corrects, but yet, it is a repeated storyline.
We have seen similar movies in the past years. And it felt real because the actors gave their all. Actors such as Eni Edo, Mercy Johnson, and a lot of others i can't recall the name. They understood the assignment, and they wore the character perfectly.
Secondly, a widow who is accused of killing her husband and locked up for days is not to still wear make up while in a distress but the lead character in this movie boldly wears her makeup in every scene.
If she wasn't ready to cut her hair in order to interpret the character perfectly, why cast her?
Anyway, it was a good watch, but the makeup ruined the work of art. This is degrading nollywood films in the chat.
