Home of Dark Aspects, a video series exploring the juxtaposition of darker moments in family-friendly video games. I talk about EarthBound/MOTHER, Paper Mario, and The Legend of Zelda a lot.

Any fans of "The Room" here? We went to see Tommy Wiseau's masterpiece at The Loft Cinema last night to ring in the New Year! It started promptly at 10:25PM, so that we could all break out the party poppers at midnight during the film's "explosive finale" (yes, it is quite morbid 😅) My wife dressed up as Mr. Wiseau/Johnny himself, and I was Greg Sestero/Mark! We took from the iconic rooftop scene for costume inspiration. The framed portrait I'm holding is a signed headshot I got when I purchased the DVD from Tommy's website (where he primarily sells his own brand of underwear, lol). "Love is blind!"

Back in 2017, I actually peformed a public skit/stunt at a Denny's restaurant with a small group of friends. That video is still up on my channel, you can watch it here! https://youtu.be/0WJ-8ZSDVn8 It was for a contest promoting The Disaster Artist, where you had to recreate a scene from The Room in public. All reactions in it were genuine, and funnily enough, we found out later that the enormous crowd sitting in the back was actually a local school drama club.

Merry Yule & Christmas...Happy Holidays everyone! I will finally be MONKEYING AROUND with Donkey Kong Bananza (and I bought the digital version of Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble for myself, hehe). You can never have too many monkey games. 🐒 I have been an owner of a Switch 2 for about one month (wife and I are sharing it, jumped in during a Black Friday sale when Mario Kart World was bundeled for free), and we bought eachother games for the holidays. She got Red Dead Redemption + Cyberpunk 2077, the latter when it was mistakingly on sale for $17.49 (thank you Deku Deals and Wario64 on Bluesky)!

Do any of you now have a Switch 2? If so, what games are you playing?

Steve Urkel (Jaleel White) voiced Sonic the Hedgehog in all three of these cartoons. Which is your favorite overall?

I went to a classical music concert last night, and they played Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5 in D minor, Op. 47. I recognized a motif used for Koopa (Super Mario Bros., 1993) in the first movement, Moderato. It plays when...[SPOILERS]

...he turns into primordial slime.

Compare the symphony (https://youtu.be/4pHiFtAr2L4?si=sulc0...) to the scene in the movie (https://youtu.be/hDp7s_clPzE?si=iCU8e...)

During the performance I was racking my brain trying to remember where I heard it from...my mind kept going to Ganon from The Legend of Zelda!

The sudden militant part of the first movement was giving me MOTHER 3 vibes, too. It's especially cool since the program I was given describes the symphony as a protest piece, which is a main underlying theme in both SMB & MOTHER 3.

I drew a [CONTENT INFRINGEMENT] of Gumshoe Gooper from Hypnospace Outlaw! Share this on your own webpage if you STAND WITH GOOPER and oppose the HSPD 🎶🎷🐟 just try to delete my cartoons, cowards!

____

I played this wonderful video game for the first time recently, and it's become an all-time favorite of mine now. Hypnospace Outlaw is a detective game that takes place in an alternate 1999, where you explore an entire fake internet made up of Angelfire/Geocities-inspired webpages. In-universe, Gooper is an old cartoon owned by the W.E. Briggs estate, and is frequently used without permission...so your job as an enforcer is to strike down these rulebreakers and flag the offending pages (even if it's fanart of the character by 1st graders, bwl) 🧑‍⚖️

Ahem! Today...

Rosalina's Storybook came in the mail! Since the cover looks VERY similar to the one from the opening of The Thousand-Year Door, I knew I had to pay homage to it right away ⛵

In the actual opening cinematic, there's a book with a blank cover on the top right. For this photo, I grabbed "Murder on the Orient Express" by Agatha Christie, as a nod to the mysteries on the Excess Express from TTYD's chapter 6 🚃

Well, I got a new (used) car! But it won't be truly mine until it's plastered with Mario Kart & EarthBound bumper stickers 😎

Last month, I had two accidents; a head injury AND I wrecked my car (two separate occasions). The first incident happened at my work…I was photographing at a school. I went outside and turned the corner--hugging the wall to allow a 3rd grade class to pass--then WHAM! Slammed my noodle noggin into a metal staircase.

Student 1: "Mister! Are you OK?"

Me: "Yeah, I'm fine..."

Student 2: "He's lying. He's bleeding!"

Me: "Nah, I'm not bleeding!"

*Puts hand on head*

"Oh..."

I had four staples in my head for a week, and if I were to shave it bald you’d now see a sizable scar. My hair was stained so it seemed as if I dyed it red; the nurse said it looked like a horror movie! I went into a supermarket looking like this, but I probably didn’t stand out too much since it was Halloween month 😅

Then about two weeks after, I was driving to work (EARLY morning…I left at 4:30AM, it happened about an hour later) on an Arizona highway. My turn came up abruptly…I nearly missed it, slid off of the paved road onto a dirt one, lost traction and BAM! Plowed the front end of my paid off car into a telephone pole, *likely* totaling it (I still don’t know yet, the car’s been towed to an adjuster so they can determine damages). People tell me that it must have been scary, but I was more worried about how much it would wind up costing me…

It’s been an unfortunate mess. There are so many videos I want to make (Majora’s Mask 4th Day Glitch exploration, Stray Children review, Dark Aspects of Pac-Man World 2) but there's a lot to figure out right now. I’m trying to stay in good spirits, which is why I will continue to post happy things. But the reality is, I don’t know when I’ll be able to get back to video editing itself. For now, I’ll continue doing these community posts because they’re easier to make, and I’ll post an update when an actual video is coming. Thank you, everyone 💚

"Your mother's, maybe." It's The Wanderer; The Sundown Kid from Live A Live (Square Enix 1994/2022)! This was my Halloween costume/cosplay from last night. The western wear (hat, gun belt) is authentic leather from my Tombstone-loving grandmother. I was armed with a knockoff Nerf revolver with foam bullets, and the rest was thrift store finds (including the blanket I used as a poncho)! As expected, I wasn't recognized as Sundown, but rather The Man with No Name (Clint Eastwood), which is close enough! The character was very clearly inspired by him.
