A new sound is created: "The Sound of Frankfurt". In 1986, young DJ’s started to produce and arrange a new generation of Synthi Pop products. Names like Talla 2XLC, Michael Münzing or Mike Staab stand for this group of enthusiastic men, mainly coming from the city of Frankfurt. In 1987, the first top hits in Europe followed by OFF and 16 Bit. But this is not the end. It’s just the beginning of a new age of music. Yes, next to Detroit and Chicago Frankfurt is the birthplace of electronic club music. And we are not talking about EDM here, "We call it Techno." This is the city of legendary clubs such as Omen, Dorian Gray and Music Hall where the new sound and a whole different youth culture flourished in the late 80s and early 90s, while later venues like U60311, Robert Johnson, Tanzhaus West and Sven Väth's Cocoon Club took the rave scene well into the new century.

Happy Birthday Pete Namlook (Peter Kuhlmann) born 25. November 1960
We still miss you.
Pete Namlook was one of the most influential figures of electronic and ambient music in the 1990s. Inspired by Oskar Sala, one of the pioneers of electronic music, Namlook focused on the untapped potential of analogue synthesizers, often developed or extended in his laboratory.
Freshly educated in composition from Goethe University, Pete Namlook (Peter Kuhlmann) started his career in Frankfurt playing in the electronic ensemble Romantic Warrior that was loosely part of the new age and electronic scene. They cut Romantic Warrior (Frog, 1985), Himalaya (Frog, 1986), Planet (Blue Flame, 1988).
In 1991 he began a second life as a disc jockey playing techno music under the moniker Sequential.
The single True Colours changed his career and a good chunk of modern music. Kuhlmann assumed the identity of Pete Namlook, opened his own Fax label and made his first album, Silence (Fax, 1992), a collaboration with Dr Atmo (and one of the first albums released only on compact disc).
Namlook understood that producing was more important than recording and he set out to discover, encourage and promote music by ambient electronic artists. During the first year alone, his label released over 100 records and CDs. The label name refers to the "fax" as a medium for fast and cheap distribution of ideas. Its humble weekly releases are equivalent to sending a fax to a group of friends.
His double albums are containers of lengthy ambient suites reminiscent of Germany's kosmische school of the 1970s and of Brian Eno's late 1970s "discreet" music, but also influenced by his two true love: eastern and classical music. No musical genre was a direct influence, though: Namlook has always claimed that Nature was his main teacher
Kuhlmann passed away on November 8th 2012, at the age of 51 from a heart attack.

OMEN Club Frankfurt 1988–1998
New Electronic Ecstasy
Das MOMEM widmet dem legendären OMEN Club erstmals eine exklusive Ausstellung. Zwischen 1988–1998
wurde in der Frankfurter Junghofstraße elektronische Musikgeschichte geschrieben.
Gegründet von Sven Väth, Matthias Martinsohn & Michael Münzing, war das OMEN einer der ersten Clubs weltweit, der programmatisch vorangetrieben von Sven Väth, elektronische Musik kompromisslos ins Zentrum stellte. Hier entstand ein neuer Sound, der Frankfurt zu einem der Epizentren einer globalen Bewegung machte.
Die Eröffnung 1989 fiel in eine Zeit des Aufbruchs – wenige Wochen später fiel die Berliner Mauer, ein Symbol für Aufbruch und Wandel der auch die Clubkultur erfasste: Der DJ wurde zum Künstler, der Club zum Ort der Identität und Ekstase. Zwischen Nebel, Hitze und tropfender Decke verschmolzen Musik, Körper und Energie zu einem nie dagewesenen Gefühl.
Die Ausstellung zeigt u. a. über 100 Fotos von Ernst Stratmann & Sascha Luond, seltene Filmaufnahmen von Pit Weber, Original-Equipment (Thorens Turntable, Rodec-Mixer uvm.) ikonische Club-Illustrationen von Stellmacher & Jensen, Zeitzeugen wie Frank Lorber, Dag Lerner, Toni Rios, Pauli Steinbach, Karlheinz Sondergeld u. a. erzählen ihre Geschichten
Kuratiert von Sascha Luond, Ingo Boss, Dr. Torben Giese & Alex Azary.
Das OMEN war mehr als ein Club.
Es war ein Ort der Erneuerung – ein Symbol des Aufbruchs, dessen Energie bis heute in Musik, Mode und Kultur spürbar ist.

Von 1988–1998 prägte es die elektronische Musik in Deutschland – jetzt holen wir
diese Ära zurück!
Im November 2025 eröffnen wir im MOMEM Frankfurt die Multimedia-Ausstellung „OMEN – Wild und wundervoll“.
Über 100 Fotos, Filme, Flyer und Original-Objekte lassen die wilden Nächte wieder aufleben. In Interviews berichten DJs, Mitarbeitende und Wegbegleiter:innen von der Bedeutung des Clubs.
Ergänzt wird das Ganze durch sämtliche Flyer, Kommunikationsgrafik und besondere Objekte rund um das legendäre OMEN.
Damit das möglich wird, brauchen wir euch: Die Finanzierung wird für Recherche, Interviews, Textredaktion, Grafik sowie Auf- und Abbau benötigt.
Die Stadt Frankfurt stellt dem MOMEM die Räume an der Hauptwache kostenfrei zur Verfügung – doch Betrieb und Programm müssen über Eintrittsgelder, Sponsorings und Spenden finanziert werden. Deshalb starten wir dieses Crowdfunding.
