It's Okay to Fall Back When You're Not Sure Where You Stand

There's wisdom in stepping back when you're uncertain about where you stand with someone. In fact, it would be foolish *not* to fall back if you're unsure about how people truly feel about you. Protecting your peace and energy isn't selfish, it's necessary. This applies whether we're talking about individuals or groups of people in your life.

Recognizing the Signs

Here are just a few warning signs that someone may not value you the way you deserve (and trust me, there are many more):

**They celebrate everyone but you.**

They openly support and congratulate others, posting about their achievements and milestones, but when it comes to you? Silence. They show up for other people's events, birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, awards ceremonies, parties, but never show up to yours. If they don't show up to support you or celebrate with you, this could be a clear sign of jealousy and/or rejection. As Proverbs 27:6 reminds us, *"Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful."* Real friends show up.

**They're always playing devil's advocate against you.**

They're constantly defending or making excuses for people who have done you wrong, seeming like they're never really on your side. Someone can do something horrible to you, and they'll make light of it, show no concern, while embracing or even showing a form of acceptance for the person(s) that did it to you. Proverbs 17:17 says, *"A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity."* If they're not there for you in adversity, they're not truly your friend.

**They only reach out when they need something.**

They only interact with you when they need something or want something. The conversation is always transactional, never relational.

**Their "jokes" feel like attacks.**

They make jokes about you that feel more like personal attacks than light humor. There's a difference between laughing *with* someone and laughing *at* them, and you can feel it.

**You're consistently left out.**

You don't get invited to certain events. You hear about gatherings after they've happened, or you see the photos online and realize you were deliberately excluded.

**Your value isn't valued.**

If you have a skill, trade, or service you provide, you don't get recommended to others they know. Or if you do get recommended, they're trying to get you to do it for free or at a low, low price. But on the other hand, they will recommend other people to you and try to push you to patronize the person they recommended. They'll pay full price for others but expect your talents to come with a discount, or for free.

**They're silent when you're praised.**

They are quick to laugh and chime in at jokes and criticism about you, but are silent when you are complimented or praised for something good. Some may even try to make statements to slight you after a compliment or praise, diminishing your moment with a backhanded comment or by shifting attention away from you.

**They're closer to your enemies than to you.**

Pay attention to how they interact with people you don't get along with. If they are more social with them than they are with you, that tells you everything you need to know about their loyalty. Psalm 41:9 speaks to this pain: *"Even my close friend, someone I trusted, one who shared my bread, has turned against me."*

The Subtle Nature of Disrespect

Here's what makes this so difficult: Many of these acts are not blatant or appear to be done on purpose or deliberate. But the sentiment is still the same. The impact on you is real, regardless of their intent. Matthew 7:16 gives us clear guidance: *"By their fruit you will recognize them."* Watch what people do, not just what they say.

The Best Advice: Fall Back

The best advice I can give you, in short form, is to **fall back**. Even if they are trying to engage with you—which happens sometimes after you fall back, you might even believe that it is care or concern, but it is not. It is, in many cases, self-serving.

They may need a muse, or someone to take the attention off of them, or they could just be bored and none of the people they would prefer to be around are available, so they chose you because they figured you were. You'll know this is the case if someone else they prefer becomes available, they'll drop you like a bad habit. Even if you and them have made plans, they will be canceled immediately with no real concern about how that may make you feel.

Additional Warning Signs to Watch For

*** They downplay your problems but expect you to rally for theirs.** Your struggles are "not that bad," but their issues require your immediate attention and empathy.

*** They share your private conversations or struggles with others.** Proverbs 11:13 warns, *"A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret."*

*** They compete with you rather than celebrate you.** Everything becomes a comparison, and they need to one-up your experiences or achievements.

*** Their body language tells the truth.** They may say the right things, but their lack of eye contact, their posture, or their rush to end conversations reveals their true feelings.

*** You feel drained, not energized, after spending time with them.** Healthy relationships should add to your life, not subtract from it.

What Scripture Says About Relationships

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 reminds us: "Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up." Real community lifts you up.

1 Corinthians 15:33 warns us plainly: "Do not be misled: 'Bad company corrupts good character.'" The people you keep close matter.

And Proverbs 13:20 tells us: "Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm."

Your Call to Action

Today, I'm encouraging you to be honest with yourself about the relationships in your life. Stop making excuses for people who consistently show you they don't value you. Stop accepting crumbs when you deserve the whole meal. Stop being available to people who only reach out when it's convenient for them.

**Fall back.**

Create space. Protect your peace. It's not about holding grudges or being bitter, it's about honoring yourself enough to stop forcing connections with people who have shown you, repeatedly, that they don't truly care.

As 2 Timothy 1:7 reminds us, "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." You have the power to make wise decisions about who gets access to you. Use it.

Conclusion

Falling back doesn't make you petty. It makes you wise. It makes you someone who values themselves enough to stop accepting less than they deserve. Some people are in your life for a season, and when that season ends, let them go with grace, but let them go.

You deserve people who show up. You deserve people who celebrate you. You deserve people who defend you, support you, and value what you bring to the table. And until those people show up, it's perfectly okay, actually, it's necessary, to fall back and create space for the relationships you truly deserve.

Remember: "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it" (Proverbs 4:23).

Guard yours.

The Danger of False Righteousness

"Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit." - Matthew 7:15-17 (KJV)

There's a particular kind of darkness that wraps itself in light, a cruelty that hides behind the language of faith, a wickedness that quotes scripture while crushing the vulnerable.

These are the ones who speak of righteousness while their hands do harm. Who invoke God's name while their hearts plot evil. Who wear the mask of Christianity like a costume, using it not as a call to love and humility, but as a shield for their cruelty and a weapon against those they despise.

"Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness." - Matthew 23:27 (KJV)

You may fool people. You may deceive those around you with your religious performance and carefully crafted image. But you will never fool God.

"For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known." - Luke 8:17 (KJV)

"Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do." - Hebrews 4:13 (KJV)
God sees the heart you hide. He knows the intentions behind your prayers. He witnesses the cruelty you commit in His name. And make no mistake, there will be an accounting.

"Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity." - Matthew 7:21-23 (KJV)

This is the terrifying reality: You can use all the right words, attend all the right services, quote all the right verses, and still be cut off from God. Not because of your performance, but because of the wickedness you harbored while performing.

"Therefore the Lord will cut off from Israel head and tail, branch and rush, in one day. The ancient and honourable, he is the head; and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail." - Isaiah 9:14-15 (KJV)

Those who use faith as a mask for evil, who wound others in God's name, who practice cruelty while claiming righteousness—they will face judgment for every deed done in darkness, no matter how brightly they polished their public image.
"For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad." - 2 Corinthians 5:10 (KJV)

Real faith doesn't need a facade. Real righteousness doesn't use God as an excuse for hatred. Real followers of Christ are known not by how loud their proclamations are, but by how genuine their love is, especially for the marginalized, the hurting, the "least of these."

"Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. Be not ye therefore partakers with them." - Ephesians 5:6-7 (KJV)

The mask may fool man. But it never fools God. And when it falls, and it will fall, the judgment will be righteous and final.

"Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." - Galatians 6:7 (KJV)

"Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil." - Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 (KJV)

The Soil We Cultivate

"If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.... Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." - Romans 12:18, 21

Peace is the soil where love takes root and flourishes. The absence of peace becomes the soil where hatred grows strong. While both seeds can grow in either environment, one will always thrive while the other struggles, stunted by the very ground beneath it.

Every seed needs soil to grow. And when we water that soil through our intentions and actions, we unlock the nutrients that feed what we've planted. The soil itself is made of everything that came before, every choice, every word, every moment of kindness or bitterness. That history becomes the essence of what nourishes whatever takes root.

This is our choice: Will we let the good seeds planted in our lives be fed by bitterness and conflict? Or will we cultivate peace so intentionally that goodness flourishes naturally, and evil finds no nourishment to thrive?

The call isn't passive. It's to actively starve what shouldn't grow by feeding what should. To choose peace as our foundation. To let our actions water the soil with goodness until love is what grows strongest.

What soil are you tending today?
