The Maggid of Mezritch was once visited by a wealthy man who was shocked by the sage’s bare, modest home. Eager to help, the man offered to provide him with a residence more befitting his stature. The Maggid gently asked about the man’s home and his travel lodgings. “Of course,” said the man, “my home is luxurious, but when I travel, I stay in simple inns.”
“Exactly,” replied the Maggid. “I too am just passing through. Someday, you'll come to my true home and you will see how completely different it is.”
The sukkah teaches us the same lesson: we’re only travelers in this world. However lovely our dwellings, they are temporary. Our true home is far greater—beyond what we can see or imagine.
This week of Sukkot, we have an amazing opportunity to bring an incredible amount of light into the world!

This Shabbat is Shabbat Chazon—the Shabbat of Vision. It’s no ordinary Shabbat.
Named for the opening words of the haftorah, “The vision of Isaiah…”, this Shabbat comes just before Tisha B’Av, the 9th of Av (this Sunday) when we mourn the destruction of both Holy Temples in Jerusalem.
Yet even in the shadow of loss, Shabbat Chazon brings a glimpse of redemption.
Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev teaches that on this Shabbat, each of us is shown a vision of the Third Temple. Though we may not see it with our eyes, our souls do. It’s a sacred reminder of the world as it’s meant to be.
Let us rise above the exile—within and without.
Let us open our eyes to a brighter future.
