The Defence Research and Development Organisation (#DRDO) has floated a formal requirement for an indigenous heavy-fuel internal-combustion (IC) engine-powered #VTOL logistics drone to support critical last-mile resupply for Indian Army personnel deployed at extreme high-altitude forward posts along the LAC and LoC.
The heavy-lift platform is being designed specifically for some of the world's most demanding operating environments, where altitude, terrain and extreme temperatures make conventional logistics challenging.

Its 200 kg payload, 25,000-ft ceiling, 50 km one-way range, ~120 km/h speed and -40°C operating requirement make it particularly suited to the harsh conditions of India's high-altitude border areas.

India has achieved a major milestone in small-arms manufacturing with the development and test-firing of a fully indigenous #AK-203 assault rifle, reportedly manufactured with 100% Indian components at the Korwa facility in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, by Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL).
The fully localised rifle has been given the name “Sher” (Lion) — reflecting its Indian identity and the growing domestic capability behind its production.
🔹 100% Indigenous Components:
The new variant is reported to use Indian-made components across the rifle, including critical parts such as the barrel, receiver, bolt and trigger assembly, replacing earlier dependence on imported/Russian-origin components.

The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) has invited domestic private companies to become Development-cum-Production Partners (DcPPs) for missile and bomb weapon-system projects under its Missiles & Strategic Systems (MSS) cluster.
🔹 What DRDO is seeking
Through a new Expression of Interest (EoI), DRDO aims to identify and shortlist capable Indian companies that can participate in the development AND production of strategically important missile/bomb weapon systems.
This is a major step towards expanding India's ability to manufacture advanced strategic weapons at scale within the country.
🔹 How the partnership model will work
Selected companies will first have to demonstrate that they meet DRDO's:
• Technical requirements
• Manufacturing capabilities
• Infrastructure requirements
• Skilled manpower & management requirements
Shortlisted companies can subsequently be considered for project-specific Requests for Proposal (RFPs).
🔹 Private industry can participate across the lifecycle
Under the proposed model, the selected company can participate in:

➡️ Weapon-system integration
➡️ Qualification activities
➡️ Preparation for serial production
➡️ Bulk manufacturing
➡️ Upgrades

The company would equip itself to carry out integration and qualification of the DRDO-designed and developed weapon system.
Following DRDO development and user trials, the company can work with the DRDO-identified supply chain to execute production orders for the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force, subject to the applicable procurement process.
🔹 Scale matters
DRDO will evaluate the industry's ability to handle bulk production in the range of 50–100 units, considering:
• Production infrastructure
• Technical capabilities
• Manufacturing capacity
• Managerial manpower
The EoI also specifies a minimum company turnover of ₹100 crore for eligibility.

The Indian Air Force is increasingly turning to 3D printing and indigenous manufacturing to tackle prolonged delays and rising costs in procuring spares for its Russian-origin aircraft.
🔹 What is being 3D-printed?
Replacement rubber components including:
• Seals
• Gaskets
• Ducts
• Brackets
• Rubberised fabric linings
Many #Russian-origin fighters, transport aircraft and helicopters have been in service for decades. As components become obsolete, sourcing them from original manufacturers can involve months-long lead times and high import costs.
Instead of waiting for an overseas supplier, #IAF repair facilities can increasingly design and manufacture replacement components domestically, potentially reducing turnaround time and helping keep more aircraft operational.
🔹 A major shift in maintenance philosophy
Traditional rubber-part manufacturing often requires specialised injection/compression moulds for individual components. 3D printing can reduce the need for expensive dedicated tooling, particularly for low-volume or obsolete parts.
The IAF's Base Repair Depots (BRDs) are playing an important role in this effort, with the technology reportedly moving from non-critical components toward more critical applications.

🇮🇳 India’s Naval Infrastructure Gets a Major Boost! ⚓
Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (#MDL) is developing a 12,000-tonne-capacity Floating Dry Dock (#FDD) at its Nhava Yard near Mumbai, strengthening India’s ability to build, launch, maintain and repair large warships and submarines.

🔹 Approx. 180 m long × 44 m wide
🔹 Designed for handling large vessels and supporting next-generation shipbuilding
🔹 Being developed at MDL’s 40-acre Nhava facility
🔹 Floating dock contract valued at about ₹475 crore, awarded to Shoft Shipyard
🔹 MDL’s wider Nhava development includes jetty infrastructure, dredging, hard stands, workshops and other shipbuilding/repair facilities.
The FDD is particularly important because it will allow MDL to move vessels from the #Nhava construction area and support ship launch, docking, maintenance and repair activities. MDL has stated that the facility is intended to support construction of advanced and next-generation vessels.
📌 Strategic significance
The Nhava expansion is being developed as a greenfield shipbuilding and ship-repair capability. In the long term, MDL plans facilities capable of supporting large warships and submarines, including major refits and repairs.
In its FY2025-26 discussions, MDL indicated about ₹500 crore of FY26 capex primarily for the floating dock, with the dock then described as roughly halfway complete. It separately outlined around ₹1,000 crore for Nhava Yard and the South Yard Annex over the following period.
This infrastructure will be increasingly important as India expands its indigenous naval construction programme — including larger destroyers, frigates, submarines and other advanced vessels.

The Prime Minister’s Office (#PMO) has directed that the long-pending restructuring of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) be completed by the end of 2026.
The objective is to transform #DRDO into a leaner, more agile, efficient and globally competitive defence R&D organisation capable of delivering next-generation military technologies at the speed required by modern warfare.
The restructuring should focus on:
🔹 Lean & focused DRDO — streamline laboratories, eliminate duplication and concentrate resources on critical and strategic technologies.
🔹 Faster technology development — reduce bureaucratic delays, accelerate decision-making, testing and project execution.
🔹 Emerging & strategic technologies — prioritise AI, quantum technologies, advanced sensors, propulsion, hypersonics, autonomous systems, cyber capabilities, semiconductors, directed-energy systems and other next-generation military technologies.
🔹 Stronger private-sector participation — expand partnerships with Indian defence companies, startups, MSMEs and academia to accelerate innovation, development and production.
🔹 Closer Armed Forces integration — ensure R&D programmes are driven by clearly defined operational requirements and future battlefield needs.
🔹 Greater accountability — establish clear milestones, timelines and measurable outcomes for major technology programmes.
🔹 Faster transition from lab to battlefield — ensure successful technologies move rapidly from research and development into testing, production and operational deployment.
The reform must go beyond simply reorganising DRDO laboratories or administrative structures. The larger objective should be to create a national defence innovation ecosystem connecting DRDO, the Armed Forces, private industry, startups and academic institutions.
India needs a defence R&D organisation capable of taking calculated technological risks, attracting world-class scientific talent and developing indigenous capabilities in critical areas where strategic dependence cannot be accepted.
By the end of 2026, the restructuring should deliver a DRDO that is faster, more accountable, innovation-driven and firmly aligned with India’s long-term military and technological requirements.
The ultimate measure of success will not be the number of organisational changes—but how quickly cutting-edge Indian technologies reach the hands of the Armed Forces.
