Reef Ecologic is a marine environmental organisation with a mission to empower people. We share knowledge about marine species, citizen science, sustainability, fish, sharks and cool locations. In 2025 we started a regular Reef (fish) conversations webinar series to share knowledge on the amazing people who are dedicated to fish, fisheries and their stories.
Reef Ecologic
Reef health is critically important to small island nations, such as Fiji. Last week, Reef Ecologic scientist Julia, connected with local divers at @jean-michelcousteauresortf3128 in Savusavu on the island of Vanua Levu, through @coralwatch, citizen science surveys.
They unify terrestrial and marine biomes. Indeed, their very foundation depends on the synchronized workings of hundreds of individual corals building large colonies by consolidating and depositing minerals. This synchronized biological dance forms large swaths of living reef structures forming a protective belt around equator.
Yet the unifying power of the reef isn't limited to biological mechanisms. The reef has a profound way of unifying people. Reefs unify countries, states, communities, and villages who rely on the reefs as a source of customs, religion, spiritual and physical sustenance, and protection.
