The Evangelical Fellowship of India joins the Indian Evangelical Mission and the wider Church in India in mourning the passing of Rev. Dr. John Wesley, former General Secretary of the Indian Evangelical Mission.
We remember him with gratitude as a humble servant of Christ, a missionary leader, mentor and encourager who gave many years of his life to the proclamation of the Gospel and the strengthening of the Church.
His long association with the Indian Evangelical Mission reflected a deep conviction that the Indian Church must take responsibility for mission, raising and sending workers, strengthening local churches and engaging in cross-cultural mission. As General Secretary of IEM from 2007 to 2015, he carried forward a missionary vision that had shaped the organisation since its beginnings.
His service was also closely woven into the wider evangelical movement in India. During his years as General Secretary of IEM, he served on the Executive Committee of EFI and contributed to the life and leadership of the Fellowship. The relationship between IEM and EFI itself goes back to 1965, when IEM emerged from a missionary vision nurtured within EFI.
Yet Rev. Wesley’s ministry was never defined merely by the positions he held. Those who encountered him knew a man who sought to serve, encourage others and remain faithful to the calling God had entrusted to him. Even after completing his responsibilities at IEM, he continued to invest in Christian leaders and in the wider mission of the Church.
His passing also reminds us of an important conviction that marked his ministry: that mission requires more than words or good intentions. It calls for prayer, sacrifice, sending, going and a lifetime of obedience.
We thank God for Rev. John Wesley’s life, witness and faithful service to Christ and His Church. His labour has ended, but the fruit of that labour remains in the lives he influenced, the leaders he encouraged and the missionary movement he helped strengthen.
Our prayers are with his wife Mercy, their sons and the entire bereaved family, and with the Indian Evangelical Mission family, in this time of grief.
May the Lord comfort them and grant them His peace. May the memory of Rev. Wesley’s life inspire another generation to serve Christ with faithfulness, humility and devotion.

Transport Department to crack down on illegal bike taxis in Bengaluru
Karnataka App Based Workers Union had threatened to launch a strike if action was not taken against illegal bike taxi operations.
The decision comes after Transport Department officials held a meeting with the Karnataka App Based Workers Union (KAWU) on Tuesday (August 4), following the union’s threat to launch a strike if action was not taken against illegal bike taxi operations.

A senior Transport Department official confirmed that Tuesday’s meeting was convened to discuss a crackdown on illegal bike taxi services and to create awareness about the illegality of such operations in the city.

“We will seize such bike taxis. The rider’s driving licence (DL) will also be suspended, and the vehicle’s registration certificate (RC) will be suspended if illegal bike taxi operations are detected,” the official told The Hindu.

Officials added that they would actively seize and impound illegal bike taxis, including those operated through app-based aggregators and other unpermitted private vehicles.

According to a press release issued by KAWU, senior Transport Department and Regional Transport Office (RTO) officials met with the union following its protest call and promised immediate legal action against illegal bike taxi operations across the city.

KAWU further stated that the RTO has decided to enforce the “One City, One Fare” policy by issuing strict notices to cab aggregators to ensure uniform fare structures across Bengaluru.

In addition, the union said it had recommended blocking or removing non-compliant aggregator applications from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store if they fail to comply with the regulations.

Hundreds rally against FCRA amendment in Aizawl
Council of Churches in Mizoram warn that the Bill could empower authorities to seize and sell the assets and properties of churches and NGOs whose FCRA registrations are cancelled or not renewed.
ajor church denominations in Mizoram came together on August 11 for a public protest against the proposed Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026. The protest saw hundreds of participants marching through the streets of Aizawl.

Organised by the Council of Churches in Mizoram (CCM), the protest brought together nine major church denominations along with members of civil society, NGOs and the public. The rally began at around 10.30 am, with participants marching from different parts of the city before gathering at Vanapa Hall.

The protest combined prayers, hymns and public speeches and was described by organisers as the first protest of its kind organised jointly by the major churches in the state.

The CCM and other groups have opposed proposed changes to the FCRA, particularly provisions they say could allow the government to take control of properties and other assets acquired through foreign contributions if an organisation's FCRA registration is cancelled, surrendered or not renewed.

Church leaders and civil society representatives said the proposed changes could affect institutions involved in education, healthcare, social work and other community-based activities that receive foreign contributions.

Speaking to the media, church leader Dr K Lallawmzuala said the proposed amendments could affect the constitutional rights of religious minorities.

“This new FCRA amendment bill is a bit draconian for minority and smaller religious groups. This law is violating the right to freedom of religion. We have the right to propagate our religion as given by our Constitution.”

Asked about the next course of action if the bill is not withdrawn, Lallawmzuala said the churches would continue to raise their voice despite having limited influence over the decision-making process.

“We have to raise our voice. This is the time to raise our voice because this is going to really affect all minority people and especially the Christian communities,” the church leader added.

Lalnunmawia Chuaungo, Congress vice-president and former chief secretary of Mizoram, also opposed the proposed amendments, saying the bill would create difficulties for minority organisations.

“The FCRA Amendment Bill 2026 is not good. It is intended at creating problems for minority communities, particularly Christian organisations, because of the many arbitrary and undemocratic provisions contained in the bill,” Chuaungo said.

Chuaungo also alleged that the proposed legislation could disproportionately affect Christian organisations and said the Congress in Mizoram was opposed to the bill in its present form.

“The stand of the party is that the bill, as it is, has to be withdrawn completely,” he said.

Assistant professor at Mizoram Christian College, Dr Vanterpali, said the protest was also aimed at creating awareness about the proposed changes and their possible impact on constitutional rights.

“I strongly believe that this is going to bring more awareness on how to protect our fundamental rights, especially the right to freedom of religion. This protest is going to educate the masses, especially the youth, because many of us hardly pay attention to what is going on behind our governments and their motives,” Dr Vanterpali stated.

She said institutions such as hospitals and educational establishments could be affected if properties acquired through foreign contributions become subject to government control under the proposed amendments.

The CCM had called on its member churches, other Christian denominations, NGOs and members of the public to participate in the protest.

The rally also marked a rare occasion when major church denominations in Mizoram came together for a common public demonstration. The CCM serves as an umbrella body for different churches in the state and takes up issues of common concern.

The proposed FCRA amendments have become a major point of concern among churches and civil society organisations in Mizoram, particularly over the possible impact on properties and institutions established with foreign contributions.

The Centre has referred the proposed bill to a Joint Parliamentary Committee for examination.

If there is any hope in this dismal time, it comes from young people who are unafraid to publicly declare that they are sick to death of what their country has become and they are there to change it.

If I were young and Indian, I would be in the Cockroach Janta Party. Ironically, for the same reasons that I once became a Modi Bhakt. Having spent my entire life in the shabby, squalid, socialist country that was created under successive Congress prime ministers, I supported Modi because I thought he would bring radical changes to rectify what had gone wrong. Among the things that had gone most wrong was the inexplicable lack of investment in the human capital of this ancient land.

It should surprise no political pundit that the cockroaches made education their first cause. The trigger was the leak of NEET exam papers, but it was only a trigger. The condition of ordinary government schools across India is truly awful. Last week, if you were watching the news channels, you would have seen children in Madhya Pradesh leaping from one pillar to the next to cross a raging dam while going to school. This state has been governed by a 'Double Engine Government' for more than a decade.

The Supreme Court on Monday made it clear: that the right to peaceful protest is "absolutely guaranteed" under the Constitution, underlining that there can't be lathicharge just because there is an agitation.

The top court was hearing a mentioning of a plea moved by RJD leader Manoj Jha flagging the use of force including AK-47 against protesters in Bihar. The court tagged this along with other petitions seeking a probe into the incidents of July 20, when the protesting students' Sansad Chalo march to Parliament was statedly met with use of tear gas and batons.

"The right to peaceful, lawful protest absolutely guaranteed under the Constitution. So long as it is peaceful agitation, merely because there is agitation, there can't be lathicharge," the top court said.

While hinting that the top court will consider bringing in pan-India guidelines on how police and security forces must deal with the protests, the court said that every citizen's right to protest peacefully is constitutionally guaranteed and must be protected. The top court also raised the issue of adequate safety gear to the police personnel.

"Police excesses must be inquired into. The governments must explain why adequate gears were not provided to police who were injured in protests," the Chief Justice said.

The bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V Mohana will hear the issue on Tuesday.

The top court has also agreed to hear separate plea alleging police personnel were beaten up during protests on NEET paper leak.

In India, tens of thousands of Gen Z protesters have taken to the streets of the capital Delhi, calling for the resignation of the country's education minister.

Starting as a satirical online movement just a couple of months ago, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) is now one of India's most visible youth movements.

Here is what you need to know.
Why did students take to the streets in Delhi?

Despite its humorous origins, the CJP quickly became a lightning rod for disaffected young people in India, where there is high youth unemployment.

Despite its name, it's not a party. The movement is led by Abhijeet Dipke, a 30-year-old political communications strategist and former student at Boston University.

He told the BBC it started as a joke. "I thought we should all come together, maybe just start a platform."

But after offering the option to sign up to the movement through a Google form, he received tens of thousands of responses.
This propelled it forward into becoming a serious protest group, and on 9 July it announced a march to parliament to take place on 20 July. Tens of thousands turned out in Delhi. Hundreds also attended protests and candle-lit vigils in other cities such as Mumbai, Bengaluru and Goa.

The protest took on added significance because of the treatment of Sonam Wangchuk, a well-known engineer and activist.

He went on hunger strike on 28 June in support of the CJP at Jantar Mantar, a 300-year-old observatory in central Delhi, which is often the site of protests.

On Saturday, the 59-year-old was forcibly taken to hospital, prompting outrage from CJP supporters and drawing further attention to the protest movement. He has continued fasting in hospital.

Why are they called 'cockroach' protesters?

The name of the Cockroach Janta Party (the Cockroach People's Party) came about in response to comments made by India's Chief Justice, Surya Kant.

During a court hearing in May, he allegedly compared unemployed young people drifting towards journalism and activism to cockroaches and parasites.

He later clarified that he had been referring specifically to people with "fake and bogus degrees", not India's youth more broadly.

The name is a parody of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has been in power since 2014.

Spilling off the internet and into real life, young volunteers to the movement have turned up dressed as cockroaches at clean-up drives and protests.

What does the CJP want?

The CJP is mostly protesting over issues they have with India's education system.

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is India's main entrance exam for admission to medical colleges across the country.

Nearly 2.28 million candidates sat the exam on 3 May, having studied for months - in some cases years - for the notoriously difficult paper. However, days later, it was cancelled after allegations that the questions had been leaked.

It was a big blow to aspirants, who had to resit the exam under tight security weeks later. Anger over this was one of the reasons the CJP began its protest.

It and families have also alleged that some 20 students died by suicide due to distress after the exam was cancelled.

The NEET exam was also hit by controversies in 2024.

The CJP is calling for the education system to be overhauled, with greater accountability over alleged exam paper leaks and for Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to resign.

Following the treatment of Wangchuk over the weekend, CJP leader Abhijeet Dipke also called on Modi to resign.


What is the impact of the CJP protest?

While it is unclear whether the CJP will achieve its aims of having the education minister removed and the education system overhauled, it has had a major impact on India.

Monday's protest was the largest against Modi's government that the capital had seen in recent years.

Police tried to disperse the crowd with baton charges and tear gas after protesters tried to push through barricades. Scores of people were injured, including both demonstrators and police personnel.

By the end of the day, officers also dismantled the stage and makeshift tents at Jantar Mantar, the protest's main base near the 300-year-old observatory. But protesters refused to leave.

People have continued to gather at the site around the clock, braving rain as well as Delhi's sweltering heat and humidity.

A day after the police crackdown, several leaders of India's main opposition Congress party staged a protest outside Modi's residence, condemning the police action against demonstrators.

Congress MP and leader of the opposition Rahul Gandhi said the party had decided to protest outside Modi's residence because it had not been allowed to raise the issue in parliament.

Congress later shared videos showing Gandhi and other party MPs being detained and taken away in police buses. They were released a few hours later.

Several other opposition leaders have also criticised the police response and demanded accountability.

Meanwhile the education minister - in his first comments since Monday's violence - criticised the Congress for "shamelessly exploiting students as political tools".

"Even after government conveyed its readiness for a comprehensive discussion, the Congress chose political spectacle over democratic debate. Their objective was never solutions for students, it was disruption for political headlines," Pradhan said in a post on X, adding that the government remained committed to addressing students' concerns.

Pradhan, however, did not directly refer to the ongoing protests - and there was no immediate response to his remarks by the CJP.
