Yesterday Montreal traded Carey Price and a draft pick to the San Jose Sharks for a prospect Gannon Laroque. Price hasn’t played since 2022 due to a knee injury and the Canadiens needed to clear the final season of his $10.5 million salary-cap hit. Montreal could have put Price on LTIR to solve the issue but that means that their cap space would not accrue. LTIR funds are different from regular cap space. Trading him was the better option. This also means that the Sharks now have the freedom to trade some of their players at this season’s Trade Deadline without worrying about the cap floor. A trade like this one benefit both teams.
This has become common practice in the NHL since the Cap inception in 2005/06 season. It was part of the agreement between owners and players after the 2004/05 Lock-out. What was the first Cap? Well it was set at $39 million and that had some immediate impact. First casualty was Jeremy Roenick in August of 2005 as Philadelphia sent him to Los Angeles for what is still called “unknown compensation”. Right behind him was Chris Pronger, also in August and St. Louis shipped him to Edmonton for three players. Then in November 2005 Boston traded Joe Thornton to San Jose also for three players.
My favorite is Shea Weber, played his last game with Montreal in the 2020/21 season with Montreal but after that has been traded to assist with the Cap Floor with three teams! He went to Vegas 6/22, Arizona 2/23 and Chicago in March of 2025. The Blackhawks are frequent users of this technique.
One more item, the Salary Cap of 2005/06 was not the first. The early days of the NHL had one implemented during the Great Depression to force the well to do teams to trade some of their stars to keep some sort of parity. That Cap was set at $62,500 per team!
