Steve McQueen and the Porsche 917K. This is not just a movie still. This is one of the most important moments in racing and film history.
In 1970, McQueen had just finished second overall at the 12 Hours of Sebring, driving a Porsche 908/2. He was not playing a racer. He was one.
When he set out to make the film Le Mans, he wanted absolute realism. So his team entered real race cars into the actual 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans, including a camera equipped Porsche 908 that finished eighth while filming wheel to wheel racing at full speed.
The car in this photo is the famous Porsche 917K, chassis 917 022, wearing the iconic Gulf blue and orange livery. This was the hero car of the film and one of the most recognizable race cars ever built.
The 917K was a monster. Flat 12 engine Over 600 horsepower Top speed near 240 mph on the Mulsanne Straight One of the most dominant endurance racers of its era
McQueen originally planned to race this exact car in the real 24 Hours of Le Mans with Jackie Stewart as his co driver. The studio stopped him for insurance reasons. Too much risk. Too much to lose.
Instead, he drove it flat out for the cameras.
This car later passed through several owners and was famously owned by Jerry Seinfeld for many years. Today it is considered one of the most valuable and historically significant Porsches in existence.
Actor. Racer. Perfectionist. McQueen did not fake racing. He lived it.
Moments like this are why the 917K is not just a race car. It is a piece of history.
