Occasional light snoring with a cold is common. But loud snoring on most nights, pauses in breathing, gasps, or sleeping with the mouth open can be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in children.
In this post, Dr. Sonali Ghosh, Consultant Paediatrician & HOD PICU (Yatharth Hospital, Sector-20, Faridabad), highlights when snoring becomes worrying and why early evaluation is important for your child’s growth, behaviour and school performance.
Key points for parents
1. Occasional snoring
Snoring once in a while, especially during coughs and colds, is usually not serious.
2. Habitual snoring
Around 3–10% of children snore loudly on most nights – this can be worrying and should be checked.
3. What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)?
OSA is when a child’s airway partly blocks during sleep. They may snore loudly, pause in breathing, or sleep very restlessly.
4. Common risk factors
• Enlarged adenoids or tonsils
• Obesity or rapid weight gain
• Long-standing nose blockage or allergies
5. Why it matters
Untreated OSA can affect a child’s growth, behaviour, school performance and attention, and may cause long-term health problems.
If your child snores regularly, speak to your paediatrician.
